That one does look like a boy. Seeing as how the weather is quite funky this time of year I have some ducklings that are getting way too big to be inside but I don't want them to be cold so I've been putting them outside during the day and inside the house during the night until it warms up...
I don't think your "wrong " per say, you followed what animal control said to do. . . As your neighbors followed laws regarding your raccoon incident. You may be adding fuel to the fire but I don't think your wrong. I personally would have probably done the same thing... But maybe they will keep...
Sorry for your loss, it will get better, since you did mention your like your birds to have access to the entire yard maybe you could set an hr or so of your time every couple of days and sit out there with them so they can enjoy the entire acre fully supervised
It's alot easier to use existing structures, we just moved into a house with a huge barn and converted to a coop using the stalls. It's worked great so far.:thumbsup
Also, if you add additional housing for everyone it may make everything a bit easier as you can set up a coop for each flock and their intended purposes etc...
The plan you have seems like a longer term plan that you've thought pretty well as you were pretty descriptive when explaining. With chickens, at times can be overwhelming but I would suggest sticking to the plan you made and making adjustments as needed over time. You'll know more of which...
