Turkey poults only eating from my hand

Interesting thing about the wings, I was hoping for two toms. And I was able to get them to eat live mealworms on off of the ground, and now they’re full, but no luck with turkey starter. They are definitely imprinted; I took them outside and they followed me around like baby geese. I didn’t...

Turkey poults only eating from my hand

I have two baby turkeys, and they have almost zero interest in food unless it’s from my hand which I find very odd. I have also yet to see them drink eagerly/by themselves without me dipping their beaks. They look well and aren’t lethargic or anything, but I think they’re a little...

Could a poorly trained older bird be retrained with untrained younger ones?

I had two pigeons, hatched April 2018, not sexually mature yet, and they used to live at a different house and were flown, but never taken out for a toss. I moved, and they seemed to have taken to the new loft well, although they were a little shaky on homing when I took them out, the furthest...

    Diet of aquatic plants

Some species, such as Canada geese, yes, but everything I could find about greylags almost exclusively states that greylags feed on grass, and terrestrial plants. I wish I lived in their natural range, so I could simply go outside and look for myself :(.

    Diet of aquatic plants

With conditioning, are greylag/domestic geese able to live entirely off of aquatic/bog plants and organisms found in them? Such plants include duckweed, misc sedges, potamogeton, ceratophyllum, etc? A fair amount of grass, and small amounts of commercial feed will also be provided.

do I offer feed to free range ducks

Mine live on a marshy lake and find 100% of their own food, although I give them a couple mouthfuls of scratch grains by hand sometimes to keep them friendly. If they're in a field, I would still give them food, just not as much as they want; if I let them my ducks would stuff themselves so full...

Craziest thing I have ever seen in my coop!

They're Eurasian Collared Doves, a non native species that has established itself across the US from, you guessed it, Eurasia. Probably slipped in through a hole somewhere trying to get at the chicken feed. When I had ringneck doves, which are a similar size, they could fit through 2"x4" welded...

    DIY pigeon waterers?

I use a rubber feed pan, they're cheap, easy to clean/replace, and especially useful in winter. Just smack it on the ground and the ice falls right out. The thing is you're not gonna want to put one in the loft since they'll jump in it and spill it. My loft has a permanent settling...

    Dove Failing to Lay Eggs

Maybe put some hay or small sticks in the bottom of the cage, the male will bring them to the female and maybe it'll trigger something. When I got my first pair they "nested" for a while and I thought I had two males, but after a few weeks one finally laid two eggs. And they "nested" in the food...

    Canker medication in Minneapolis?

I have a young pigeon with canker, and she won’t eat, and can’t swallow very well if force fed. The only place I can find medication is online with 5+ day shipping, but I need it ASAP. I was wondering if anyone in the Minneapolis area knows of any stores that carry it. Thanks.

    Ducks on a lake thread

Still doing well, theyve learned to forage/hunt, and avoid predators already, and are getting better at flying too

    Ducks on a lake thread

Yeah, it's really amazing to see them live free instead of in a little coop with a kiddie pool. And yeah, they're khakis. Last year I had calls on a pond but I sold them after it froze.

    Ducks on a lake thread

I see you are from Canada, which may be the case there. I emailed the Dept of Natural Resources about a year ago and the guy I was directed to stated there is nothing preventing anyone from letting their ducks swim on lakes, public or private, as long as said person doesn't abandon them. Mine...

    Ducks on a lake thread

I just thought I'd share this for anyone who might be interested, as it’s very different from how the majority of, if not all people keep their ducks. I started a little experiment this year; keeping ducks on a lake. This is in contrast to last year where I kept 2 geese and a few calls on a...
