I have been in the hospital and rehab since May 13. My daughter has been taking care of the chickens since then. She forgot to gather eggs and a hen went broody. Today, she saw four chicks. What should I have her do for them u til I go home either tomorrow or Tuesday?
I have four hens. Lilibet (Lilly) is a Barred Rock, Mary and Stella are EEs, and my Silver Laced Wyandotte is Wynstyn *thought she was a Roo when we named her.
What kind of shavings are you using? I use straw in the nest area, and Sweet PDZ under my roost and have never noticed any flavor other than deliciousness. :)
I have an opportunity to get some Blue Ameraucana chicks, or fertilized eggs. I'm not sure I'll do it, though, since my four girls (2 EEs, a Barred Rock, and a Silver Laced Wyandotte) are doing well together. Just checking out the thread for more info.
This will be my first winter with chickens in many years! For my four layers, I have a very small coop inside a predator-proof run with a domed top. The top is covered with a tarp, dark-side-up to help capture some heat. I plan to put grommets on heavy-gauge clear plastic to wrap the sides of...
As the others said above, you are likely to see a lot of variations in the eggs of a young layer. Be sure to offer calcium to help her build those shells, and enjoy the surprises that come while she is still trying to "get it right!"

I've gotten an egg each day since one of my four hens started laying Saturday. They have all been in mid afternoon. This morning, when I went to feed them, there was a still-warm egg in the nest. Looks just like the other three. Now, I'm wondering whether it was the same hen, or the other EE...
So excited! I had just posted this morning that my girls weren't laying yet, and when I went out to check just a little bit ago, there was a single, perfect little blue-green egg under their roost! I'm not sure which one of the two Easter Eggers laid it, but I'm pretty sure they will both be...
My four girls are almost 24 weeks old. The SLW and Barred Rock have looked ready to go for at least three weeks, now, but haven't squatted yet. My EEs are no where near as red as the other two, but they have both started squatting in the last few days.
I am still waiting patiently... or maybe not so patiently for my ladies to start feeding me, for a change. My Silver Laced Wyandotte and Barred Rock have looked ready to go for about three weeks now, and my two EEs are now getting pretty red. A couple weeks ago, I figured the first two would be...
You will want a protected place for them to roost. Depending on how cold and harsh your winters are, you risk frostbite if they are roosting outside. You also don't want to spend all of your time cleaning poop out of their nest area.
