    Injury warning!

I used the chain/skewer things because they seem to enjoy it - like they're playing. It also allows the little one (Baby Ruth) to enjoy treats without being run off by the bigger girls, as she is ALWAYS run off. This way, everyone has their own, and they seem to have fun. I have two panels...

    Injury warning!

She seemed absolutely fine the next morning - in fact, she led the jail break out of the coop when I opened the door. I tried her on millet and fly larvae and she gobbled them right down. I hand feed her crumbles instead of pellets because I feel like, if that was me, I don't know if I'd want to...

    Injury warning!

I'm that person who always has to learn things the hard way. With that being said, we had an "incident" here a couple days ago. I was standing at the kitchen sink, washing my hands, getting ready to start dinner. As I always do when I'm in the kitchen, I looked out the window where the chicken...

Small eggs, soft eggs, no eggs

Yeah, like I said, I already stopped that for that very reason. It doesn’t seem to have made any difference…yet.

Small eggs, soft eggs, no eggs

Thanks for this! And, yeah, they don't like the sunflower seeds anyway. Someone (I forget where) said they feed a combo of oats, black oil sunflower seeds, grit, and something else. I tried some of the sunflower seeds out of my bird feed stash and they apparently felt they were too high class...

Small eggs, soft eggs, no eggs

First, some basic information. I have three Barred Rocks, 23 weeks old. There is one Blue Orpington approximately 16-18 weeks old. I found my first egg when the three Barreds were just a smidge shy of 20 weeks. Early on, I was getting one solid egg, on average, every day. But, I was also...

    Bully hen, or rooster?

    That's kind of what I'm afraid of...LOL

    Bully hen, or rooster?

This chicken has taken to crowing. Not like the average person whould imagine a rooster crowing, but more like a "Ooooh-Ooooh" kind of sound. I can't ever seem to record her doing it, but there's supposedly a way to tell by the chicken's appearance. There are three (this one is one of them) who...

Help me identify this wee beastie please (injury pics)

For $60 at Amazon, I got two trail cameras that take video. One night they captured a raccoon frat party in my pen, and the next, a possum. Possums are more deadly than people credit them for. And they decapitate. They, too, would make small bite wounds like what you showed. Just a possibility.

What’s the name of your coop?

The Chick Inn. And the structure where their food is, is the mess hall.

    Hello from Western NY

Hello, everyone! I am a 68 year old female retired Army veteran and live in a suburb of Rochester, NY. My town allows us to have up to 6 backyard chickens (must get a license) so I took the plunge. My ex and I had 11 acres a dozen or so years ago, and we had just shy of 2 dozen chickens...
