The top hens following our new rooster around. They fluffed up once with each other and now they love him. He's a fantastic, calm, rooster so far who has already shooed off a squirrel. The aunt's farm (where he came from) didn't have them, so he wasn't sure what it was.
Then a meme I made...
Our current record holder. Beat the last one by 4g. This one was 92g /3.2 ozs.
Later, cracked it into a pan for the kiddo and it legimately looked like I'd cracked two "regular" sized eggs instead.
We sold our rooster tonight. He was getting too territorial around the coop. He was a good, gentle rooster with the hens and I know he's going to a home with a flock as opposed to a freezer.
I admit I will not be missing his very loud calls. At all.
Using a local 16% protein layer feed with oyster shell always available and they also get backyard range time.
My aunt, who's had chickens for decades, is absolutely confident that it is, in fact, just a bloody egg. Given the color of the egg, I'm fairly positive I know who laid it and her last...
No egg shells/signs of a broken and eaten egg.
This was the nesting box it came from, along with at least 4 others this morning. (Ignore Ms. Quasi, she was curious if I had treats lol)
So I got this egg this morning. Almost thought it was bloody at first (maybe it is?) My next thought was the calcium build up that can happen, but it can be scraped off. The longer lines aren't cracks, so I'm presuming they're feather barbs/barbules.
My final thought, then, was did I just...
I have a single raspberry bush in a half wine barrel planter. It is protected by a circle of chicken wire on the inside, then a double layer of tomato cages on the outside WITH a shade cloth over it all. And yet, today, I found these three eggs in it.
I was like, yay ANOTHER hidden "nest" I...
Standard I know this thread is older buuut I'm wondering if my Lavender Orpington is also a hunchback.
She has zero symptoms of an impacted or sour crop. No lethargy, loss of appetit, and normal bowel movements.
Okay, so I'm pretty freaking convinced this is NOT a crop issue. After fasting her, then still seeing the lump, I gave her coconut oil and started massaging.
Her crop feels separate to the immoveable boney structure I'm feeling in her neck. From my experience butchering chickens, I'm beginning...
This is her after ~12 hours with no food and water. So I'm cooking her some egg with olive oil. I'll give her that and water back and keep her inside. I'm also going to pick up some coconut oil.
Silly story time:
I know we have raccoons in our area, because we're a suburban area filled with trees and raccoons basically are everywhere. That being said, in the 12 ish years we've lived here, I've maybe seen two raccoons in a block radius of our house.
Until three mornings ago.
I happened...
