This helps a lot. I need to do some more research and stock up on my knowledge. I will be looking for some local farms selling chicks and keep my fingers crossed I find one who raise their chickens the way you described. I really do get what your saying and it makes so much sense. I was raised...
Wow! So much info! Haha.
What I think is right for me is...
Free range of my yard all day since I'm a stay at home mom.
Organic, non GMO food.
Organic, GMO free, heirloom scraps from my garden.
No vaccines, medications, or contamination.
Sometime I don't think it's possible because if I...
I have been on the hunt for organic, GMO free feed that wont cost a fortune to ship. Scratch and peck feed was one I was looking at but I was hoping to find something a little cheaper or even something local to where I can just pick it up. I want to have healthy happy birds more than anything...
Thank you! I really wanted to stay as organic as possible so this is helpful! I just would hate for one of them to get ill and I couldn't help because I wasn't prepared. I really don't know the success rate of organically raised chickens so I wanted someone's experienced advice.
What are the most important medications, vaccines, and supplies needed for starting a new flock. I want to have a list of things to buy so I am prepared for everything possible when I bring my chicks home.
So glad to hear it's pulling through. You have the right idea separating it from the rest. Just keep a close eye on him/her to make sure it doesn't contract any illnesses. I guarantee that with the state it's in, it's immune system is lacking. I am keeping my fingers crossed for you! Would love...
I agree with humblehen. Raising them is a great idea if you don't want to replace them. You can do the perching idea or hang them off a home made tripod. I did this with my last flock (not because of ducks) and it kept them much cleaner from flying dirt from them scratching or chicks walking in...
Oh no no no no.. The fish in question would come from my mothers pond. These goldfish are pushing 8 years old. They are a foot long or longer and as thick as a baseball bat! I would hope a duck wouldn't dare try to swallow one of those monsters.
I have some very general questions about shelter, food, and water with raising ducks with chickens. I'll give an introduction to my plans and follow it with my questions. You can skip the introduction and get to the questions if you'd like, just want to give all the information you need to base...
Thank you! I am trying to get used to the different threads on the forums. It's easier to do on my desktop but I use my phone more frequently. Yes I will have a large run added onto the coop to keep everything cleaner for the most part. I won't be keeping any "swimming" water for the ducks in...
I would stop waiting on it to try to free itself. Intervene fully and take it completely out and get some water and electrolytes in it. It completely depleted it's energy trying to get out, if you wait any longer it will surely die.
I'm going to start a new flock of chickens in the spring and I wanted to know if I could also bring home a few ducklings with the chicks? I have decided on Cayuga ducks since they originate from NY and I live in Ohio so they would be perfect for my climate. I have an 8'x8'x10' shed I'm...
This is just my personal experience with this, but years ago I was raising bantams and had a chick in the same situation. He struggled for about 20 hours and I finally stepped in and took the risk. He was very dehydrated at that point and I have him electrolytes in his water for the first 2 days...
