Update: Big Bird is doing great! She even started laying over a week ago, a perfect big egg everyday since!
I’ve been soaking her food and adding slippery elm and olive oil to it for the past weeks, limiting food and checking her crop every morning. Now I’m going to transition to her regular...
I think the last egg she layed was at the beginning of all this, a few days after we discovered her sour crop, although I can’t be sure she didn’t lay one when in with the other ladies, but I don’t think so. And no wonky eggs. I kind of assumed that it’s because she’s been sick and not getting...
So it’s been a rough week. Big Bird developed sour crop again, which is getting better as I’ve got her back in the miconazole. But I’m not sure what the underlying problem is. Her crop is still slow. I’d like to deworm her, but none of the vets in my area sell chicken dewormer, and the feed...
thank you lightm! I will definitely give the slippery elm a try. I hadn’t come across this yet in my research, so I appreciate you bringing it to my attention :) hopefully it helps get things moving a bit
That’s a great idea, I’ll give her regular crop massages. It makes sense when you look at the anatomy that if a crop is stretched out and the food is hanging lower than the opening it needs to go in, well, it doesn’t go in. Hopefully that helps. I may also try to start soaking the food for...
Hello again,
So I got up just before the ladies this morning to be able to check Big Birds crop- and it was pretty full! :( Not hard packed full, felt pretty grainy, I could massage it easily, but not watery either.
She’s been happily with the rest of the flock, acting normal.
What should I...
Last day of the miconazole!
Might do another day or two just to be sure, but she seems back to normal. She sure got hungry fast! Felt like I was feeding a baby velociraptor in the days where I was trying to limit her food a bit, haha. Today she’s back in with the flock- and has access to...
She’s getting better! I’m so relieved :) When I felt her crop this morning I almost couldn’t find it! Yay
Im giving her the miconazole twice a day, and getting better at getting it in her mouth by myself.
She still wouldn’t eat cooked egg this morning, so I gave her some soaked chicken food...
Thanks for the suggestions :)
I tried this morning to follow your advice StinkyAcres, and I managed to get a bit of cream in her mouth, but she’s pretty feisty. I’ll keep practicing, seems like a good skill to have!
She’s still not interested in cooked egg, but she drank a good amount of...
So I gave her a second dose of clotrimazole this morning and then started the monistat cream with miconazole in it this evening.
I tried at first to sneak the cream into pieces of corn again but she could tell which ones had the cream and wouldn’t eat those- But when I rubbed it into a tiny...
Hello,
Evening update. My friend who brought me the vaginal yeast infection cream got the kind with Clotrimazole in it, and after some research I gave that to her this evening thinking it was better than nothing and will get miconazole tomorrow and do the full 7 day treatment with that. I was...
Hi alinas2010,
Thanks for your reply. I think you’re right, time for the miconazole. I’ll get some today.
She is pooping, mostly one big diarrhea like poop a day with some bubbles in it- and her crop this morning was big and squishy. Seems more and more like sour crop now. She seems almost...
Hi All,
Two days ago in the evening I noticed one of my hens was acting lethargic, when I payed closer attention I noticed liquid coming from her beak every time she lowered her head-yikes! Her crop was huge and squishy. I vomited her (which I now know was risky) and a LOT of yellowish liquid...
Hi All,
Just joining, after many internet searches leading to great answers here. What a great resource!
I’m a first time chicken owner, but my partner has had chickens before. We have had our 8 hens since they were one day old in May 2023. They are a mix of mixes- lots of heritage breeds in...
