I had a hatchery buff that went broody as soon as she started laying eggs. When spring rolled around I let her sit on purchased hatching eggs and it started a broody epidemic in my hatchery flock. I had to buff orpintons, a partridge rock and 2 silver penciled hamburgs sit long enough to...
OK mind you I am fairly new to this but I did have a broody hatch last spring so I'll pitch in to get this started. I had a BO who really wanted to be broody (she tried twice in winter but I'm in Minnesota so I broke her or busted her or whatever the term is) I was very careful about getting...
I have had well water in three different states and some of it is way worse than others. Right now I put purchased filtered water in the coop but when they are out they drink well water from the kiddie pool the dogs swim in. I haven't had it tested in a few years because I don't drink it but I...
I am pretty new at this myself but I read that some broodies quit before the job is done so the last time mine went broody I let her sit for the full 21 days before I busted her up (is that what it's called?) Anyway now she is sitting on fertile eggs and I have two more sitting but they will...
By my calculations you can have 5 - So go get 2 more
Here in Minnesota I need that 4 square foot per bird in the coop because they spend a lot of time in there in winter. In Southern California you may want to go with smaller coop and more run .......... or just figure the 4 square feet for...
I can't really say if the red bulb works - just something I read somewhere. As far as winterizing the run some will say yes and some will say no but really that decision should be left to the owners.
Actually I think the red light is supposed to help with the pecking because if they see blood they will go after it and the red light makes the blood less visible? Is it just a red bulb or a heat lamp bulb - big difference in the amount of heat output. I would not use a heatlamp bulb in a coop...
Not sure if the welded wire is the same size as mine but if it is a 2X4 will slide right through one side to the other - makes a good roost if you had a nest box like kari dawns pictured you could probably hang the waterer and feeder underneath
I love bleach - I have always used it to clean - even before I had chickens, but I think 50/50 may be a little too strong. I use it to wash my deck and house siding and follow that recomended formula -1 cup bleach, 1/2 cup laundry detergent, to 1 gallon of warm water in sprayer - spray on let...
I'm new at this but I have a coop that is 6X 10 so just 4 square foot smaller than yours. I have 15 in there now and it's working out all right - but when I had 4 more it was just too many - too much squabbling and hard to keep up with the poop. Can they use the run all the time or is there...
Hey DKMfan I think I'm going to have to call you out of the chicken lovers closet as I see you have been a member of this forum for a year and a half - congrats on your sneaky way of getting those chickens you've been wanting!
