Mine all have the grey legs. They look mostly like silver to me, some are white or black. I do not know enough about the breed perfection standards to know if the silver colors are good enough. I am primarily interested in egg color and quality. In 4 years I have yet to get a bird throwing any...
I would cross breed them, then let the next generation grow out. At worst you will have some blue eggers in there. I think they are the best egg for poaching, anyways, so no loss there! If you are limited on space you can sell the blue layers, and keep your first generation OE to breed. I...
I have had wonderful luck with Ideal Poultry Ameracaunas! They all have the proper muffs and other characteristics, and have all lay big blue eggs for me thus far. I love them. The only EE in my flock came from a local person.
One of my Ideal Ameracaunas crossed with my English Black Orpington...
My 1st gen Marans x Isbar just hatched out 11 olive eggers (plus a polish frizzle and a white legger x olive egger which will probably lay more white eggs.) The eggs that hatched are one grey and copper topped EExOE (these all turned out to be OE hens last time, and most were olive with little...
Blerg! I lost sleep the other night over the fact that my favorite little pullet ever, purchased as an OE (RIR x Wheaten Am) suddenly appears to be a roo. I don't mind having a roo as much as loosing out on having any olive eggs at all, for some time. S-he is hanging out with my Isbar trio...
I just got my first GLO hatchling, from a batch of hatching eggs. I can't remember of feathering out first on wings is a trait by which they can be sexed. I have a picture of him under the brooder light:
Any idea as to gender?
I got into Magpies by accident. I got a crested magpie drake as an extra. I have never met a better duck. I want to get all magpies now/next season, though not all crested of course! Sadly a starving dog found my farm today, got into the coop, and ate my sweet, funny, smart drake. I have...
I had a wild one scoping my magpie out, until I got more ducks. We are way back from the road, and did not yet have a pond. It was as though she though my lone duck might be lonely?
I am sad to report that a starving dog was found eating my only magpie, Malcolm, this evening. He was by far the smartest and most wonderful of all of my ducks. I still plan to get Magpies in the spring. I am just sad that they will be missing out on their mentor.
Does anyone have some...
@laughingdog we had 5 keets held until they were able to live without heat at a local breeders. They were feathering, and hiding away from the light at 4 weeks, but died when she took away the lamp. You may want to give them a little longer. I like that they alert to anyone coming out onto...
