    Thanks for this article. I’m just getting started with laying hens and have a rooster in the bunch. They are all 20+ weeks old and the hens would be laying if it weren’t for the cold temps. Right now I’m planning to keep the roo...but we’ll see.

    What do you use to encourage scratching in Winter?

    I have been mixing barley and shelled corn as whole grains. Since I’m using the deep bedding method, a few handfuls of these grains and they are scratching through the bedding like I need them to.
