I definitely have been thinking about a new chicken coop!
Yes, the water is in the run, not in the coop. Sorry if it seemed like otherwise. Their water and food is both outside, and the water has a heater in it.
I did remove all the dividers in one side, and one on the other side. They've only...
Hello! I am a new chicken owner, and I live in Mid-Michigan. I was told by others around that I don't need to do much for my four chickens over winter besides make sure they have fresh water that isn't a block of ice. I have a water heater in their water, but I'm worried that I need to do more...
New chicken owner here! I'm worried that my chickens may be frostbitten, and so any advice would be great. I'm attaching pictures of my lovely ladies. I live in Mid-Michigan, so we've been getting some snow and cold weather lately. I was told that I don't really need to do much for my chickens...
Even the Wyandottes? I thought I read that they lay all through winter.
If it is that they're just done for the winter, I'll feel much better, like I didn't do something wrong for them!
I'm not trying to argue, promise! I'm just learning all about these little ladies! :)
Hen advice needed! I have four hens, two silver laced wyandottes and two sapphire sky. We got them back in early May, and two of them (I believe the Wyandottes) have been laying since early September. We've gotten a few eggs from the sapphire sky, but maybe only four in total.
The two...
Hello! Does anyone have a fully-dirt run? I don't mind raking it every day, and I don't necessarily have the resources right now to start a deep litter method. It's a 10x10 run, stays relatively dry unless we get a big rainstorm, and we only have 4 chickens. What can I put on top to help it not...
I don't mind cleaning. We don't get a ton of organic matter in our yard, only grass clippings, as we don't have any trees besides a small one out front. Anything I can do to keep costs of buying things to a minimum would be great.
How often would you rake it? Every day? Every other? Could you...
Hello! First time chicken owner, and I need some advice on the chicken run, particularly the smell. We have a small coop with four chickens, and a 10x10 chicken run for them. They've dug it all down to dirt, and I rake it every Saturday, as well as completely clean their coop and put fresh...
That's good to know about raccoons, though. I'm hoping to let them out an hour or so after sunrise, and get them in early, to avoid the dawn/dusk predators snooping around.
We're planning on getting hardware cloth to put along the outside within the next few months. The enclosure came with the chicken wire, and so it just needs to hold up for a couple of months, if possible.
