well the first thing that popped into my head was anything made of the fuzzy velour especially purple and pink... then I realized you means foliage! lol... sorry couldn't resist!
I have chickens, geese and turkeys.. so it may not be specific to just chickens but I hear rhubarb and...
I use the sand also but have heard that many pet stores carry fine-grained grit for parrots, etc. I've never checked it out but you might if you've got a pet store near your home.
This would work well where my coop/run are located as I could let the overflow trickle into my garden (which is next to the run). Of course, none of this will be necessary once I finish training my birds to simply walk to the faucet, turn it on, and use the drinking ladle I've placed for them...
Very impressive all the way 'round! Your husband is a craftsman. I've been a carpenter for 30 years and that's not a word I throw around casualy. Wish I could hire some guys with his obvious skill/care. On a side note. Chickens are mean drunks so be sure they stay off the sauce:)

I hear ya' on learning new words from hacking through tree roots! My problem was Maples. No matter where I dug I'd hit one. I know when you hit a big one with post-hole diggers it sure sends a nasty shock through the old wrists! Really cool setup you have there. Nicely done!
What a fantastic set-up you guys created! Very, very cool! Makes me want to go out and throw rocks at my coop...And good grief, I make my living as a carpenter! Congrats on a job well done!

"Hay" usually refers to alfalfa but can also (and more correctly) be wild grasses which have been allowed to grow, then cut, let dry, and bailed, or even wheat or oats which have been cut with the grain still attached, allowed to dry, then bailed. "Straw" on the other hand, refers to...
Like many have noted, I really wish now that I had built mine bigger. It's 10'x12" but I think that, had I sprung for 12'X12' I'd be much happier.
Now I'm going to do a search for droppings boards as I really need to construct some.
I hate coyotes and don't care who knows it. Been around them and seeingn what they can do has made me their mortal enemy. I agree with all who suggest getting a second pup. I know a coyote hunter who uses hounds and had one, big male 'yote kill two and seriously wound one more of the four hounds...
My mother (85) said lots of folks used to use wood ashes in their dusting areas. Claims it will keep lice, etc. under control and cause no significant problems other than an occasional sneezing fit amongst the girls. I'm planning to add some this week. Just my .02.
Great info. Thanks for taking time to conduct the experiment and post your findings. I'll state what many of you here already know: Neil is The Man! I ordered a doz. push-in nipples Thurs. afternoon, noonish, and had them Saturday. Service just does not get better than that!

Along these lines, I had a Setter pup get ahold of a bar of mouse bait. She hadn't eaten much but still...I took two pieces of bread and kept toasting them until they were burnt all the way through, crunched it up and added enough water to make a paste, then used a large, 100 cc cattle...
"... but I'm getting mental images of them walking around upright dressed in white science research jackets holding test tubes ..."
I've actually seen that. Of course that was before I quit drinking...come to think of it, that was why I quit drinking.
