The newest members to my outside bird family. Quite cute, but super messy and smelly at the moment. I can't wait for them to get to full size.

Laying eggs in all the wrong places...

So my flock is pretty much laying on a steady schedule now, but I am having some issues with where they are laying. I built a group of roosting boxes, 3 up to, and three floor level. They only seem to be using the floor level ones, but that's not my main problem...although any thoughts on how...

    Weird white spots on egg...

I recently picked up this strange looking egg from my coop. I saw all the white specs and just thought it was dirt and such so I washed the egg. The specs appeared to have disappeared after washing and I set it down to dry. When I came back to it, much I my surprise, almost all the specs were...

    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

I have 8 hens, 1 bantam rooster that crows no matter what time of day! :-p one of the hens is also a bantam. Speaking of which, what size/style of eggs so they usually lay?

It is and it's an amazing thing as well to know that I helped and was part of it. I love nature!

    Mixed behavior towards humans

Hi all, this is my first time raising chickens and I'm having a grand old time! I am curious to how hens should normally act around people. I have 8 hens and 1 of them is a bantam. I then have 3 orange, 2 black, 1 white, and one salt&pepper (not 100% on any of the breeds). Overall they don't...

Offered Surrendered chickens from a local shelter

Yeah, the shelter is actually one I volunteer at and they are great, but like you said, most shelters aren't set up for farm animals and that is exactly the case here. Since I have the ability, I think I will be fostering these two until the shelter can find someone to take them in. I would...

Offered Surrendered chickens from a local shelter

Oh, Ooops, I totally misread what you had said. Darn my dyslexia! Thanks for the clarification. I will have to make other arrangements for the two surrendered hens as the shelter is unable to keep farm animals. Wish the outcome could have been different, but I have to do what's best for the birds!

Offered Surrendered chickens from a local shelter

So am I reading this right: you're saying that I could add 2 more, but that would prett much max my current coop out? OR are you saying I'd have to modify the size of my current coop to add these two new hens? Side note: my coop is also 8ft tall and I plan on making a second tier, in the near...

    Roosting boxes

Actually, the next day after posting this I found an egg and have been getting 1-2 eggs per day now. The eggs are always in the same place and not in the upper roosting boxes. Whomever is laying the eggs seems to be laying them underneath the roosting boxes in the corner. I would rather get...

Offered Surrendered chickens from a local shelter

After taking a look at them myself I would guess they are closer to 2 months...maybe 3 max (not sure if that matters).

Offered Surrendered chickens from a local shelter

Hi All, I am very new to the chicken scene and currently have my first flock of 9 (8 hens and 1 rooster). My chicks are currently about 4 months old and are going to be used primarily as egg laying and pets. I currently have them in an indoor/outdoor coop that seems to be big enough for the...

    Chickens just died

I like to start off by express my sorrows for your loss. It is never easy to lose a pet no matter what. Now I'm no expert on chickens, but my guess would be they either do not have enough shade, aka a place to go when the sun gets too hot or they were not hydrated enough. I'd suggest either...
