So, here is my story about supposed ordinances in Maize Kansas...
My wife and I were going to get a backyard flock a few years back so she went to city hall and asked about the laws in our town of Maize. They said chickens were not allowed so we decided to get out of dodge and started...
Kind of blurry, but you get the picture. The lower half of the back is bare except for the pin feathers. Most of the time the wings cover the spot... Most of the other black jersey giants look like this too.
Thanks
I noticed her too because she would not get up to greet me like the others and the only time she would move was when she felt threatened and then only flop around a bit to get out of the way. I thought it was something really bad at first too, she would stretch her wings out as well to...
Not from my chickens -- which are sleeping right now.
This is what their entire lower backs look like though. Some pin feathers are more developed than others, but they don't seem to be growing all that fast.
I have 49 rhode island reds and black jersey giants together in a brooder. They are 6 weeks old right now and are fully feathered except for about half of them that have a spot that covers half their back on the lower side where they only have their pin feathers growing in. You can tell...
I had a chick too that would just sit around and not eat or drink and would also just fall to the side when she tried to stand. It was a leg issue and I kept her separated from the others for a week with her own food and water with probiotics and electrolytes. I put her back in with the others...
Cockerel for sure. I had the same problem, bought 10 from Orschelen's and got one roo out of the ten. Looks just like the guy in your pic. Wait for the crow, that will tell you for sure.
If you have a light on them, lowering the temperature will stimulate feather growth, and extra protein intake like BlackBriars said. Hard Boiled egg is good.
Ah, I see, yes, that water dish should be plenty big for 6 chicks. I put apple cider vinegar in my chicks water for a health boost, and I also put electrolytes and probiotics in as well every few days. Something you could look into if you want :) I put about a tablespoon of vinegar per gallon...
No that sounds good. You have the basics. Food/water/heat/bedding. How many chicks do you have? Is the waterer a nipple style where only one chick can drink at a time?
Aart - lol the dust is a pain... This was my first batch so I followed the 'rules' more closely than I will the next time :) I did notice that the ones from the store feathered out quicker than the ones from the hatchery I received in the mail. They were a lot colder in the store for the first...
Well, just to let everyone know, it was a cockerel. He just let out his first pitiful crows this morning LOL. I thought one of my dogs was yelping, but it was just him...
Mims- I feel you about the stress LOL, It has been soo nice having them in the tents. Your set up looks great! Let me know how it goes. Keep the screens clean by vacuuming them with the upholstery tool every few days/twice a week. It seems that if you do it every 3 or 4 days it keeps the...
