Put a camera up last night watching the back side of the coop where the varmit got in. It was a raccoon - just as I thought. After trying every single eave gap and failing to get in, he gave up and wandered off. I'm thinking I'll give it another night or two before putting the girls back in the...
Cameras are a good idea.
My son did find where the varmit entered the coop. Earlier this year, I added an 8' square addition onto the original coop and run so the girls had more space (I also went with 12 chickens this time instead of 6). Apparently, while I was joining the new run's roof line...
For the past two nights, a predator has gotten into my coop. The first night it killed 2 hens. The entire abdominal cavity was ripped open/gone, and the internal organs eaten. Another chicken has a nasty bite or claw mark on its back between its wings, which I cleaned out and put iodine on.
I...
Mary, there were no injuries and its most likely that I intervened too early - I'm new at this. I saw an article that suggested putting the hen in the run in a crate during the day for a day or two and to use lots of treats - so I'll give that a try.
I'm a little afraid to free range the...
I have a 16-week old Easter-Egger flock of 5 pullets and a cockerel living in the coop and run and one remaining Comet that is 2-1/2 years old living in my barn (her sister was killed the other day). The comet free-ranges during the day, spending most of her time hanging out by the pen - so all...
My cockerel is 12 weeks and he just looks at me and cocks his head. He's never showed any aggression and, when I enter the pen, he backs right off and if I advance on him he'll run into the coop. If I speak softly, he'll sometimes let me pet him (when putting feed out) but most of the time he'd...
No, I don't have a rooster with the Comets - just hens. As for the EE, none of the other chicks in that group are as developed as the cockerel. I've even got one hen that, if I didn't know was born on the same day, would swear was 2-3 weeks younger than the others.
I've heard crowing occasionally, but I've never been able to tell which one it was as they were always in the coop. They are also not very vocal compared to the Comets I have. Are Easter Eggers always on the quieter side?
He's actually pretty tame with the pullets. Its the other flock he seems to have get aggressive with, but they have their own coop so I'm not concerned until they are all free ranging next spring.
I'm thinking the "hen" with the really bright comb is actually a rooster. She/he is quite a bit bigger than the others and the clear "master/mistress" of the group. He/she also is constantly fluffing out the neck feathers when my other free-range hens come near the pen. He/she's only 11 weeks...
