We just moved from the north coast East to the high desert near Nevada - The deer are thick in the yard every day (Very Tame) This is our girl Cali & some deer studying each other this morning... The girls are in a temporary coop until I finish their more permanent yard, hopefully today. They...

Putting a "Property Damage" Price on Layers

I recently met my new neighbor through the (then) 5 foot fence, he was coming quickly through a small group of trees that divides our yards to retrieve his little pit bull that was licking his chops when I came out to check my girls.. The dog began to growl at me, so, I yelled at him to "GIT" ...

What could've killed my perfectly healthy chicken?

You are in the same general area as us too, I have been searching the yard and removing anything that looks suspicious... While looking for the bad things, I did find a Red Huckleberry (and they're ripe), so at least some good came from it.

What could've killed my perfectly healthy chicken?

I wonder if maybe that was it? As I said, she showed no signs of sickness last night. I'd...

What could've killed my perfectly healthy chicken?

Thank You - They are free range and pampered like nobody's business... What you're saying would make sense, as she was happy go lucky at bed time... I will certainly keep an eye on the rest and clean the cage again just to make sure it, what ever "it" is, is not in there... As for the...

What could've killed my perfectly healthy chicken?

I put her to bed last night happy & healthy, she even laid yesterday - This morning when I opened the coop door, she was sitting in the hay below the roost... It's not terribly unusual, she would sometimes decide to roost in the hay, she was weird like that. hours later my wife sees her in...

    Can't break a broody hen.

My orpington just stopped being broody finally, it took 6 nights in the broody cage and 7 days locked out of the coop and free ranging. .. She's the leader so, the flock was in disarray while she was checked out. They are a tight gang of four again. Can't wait until she starts laying again.
