Syble, Seems like forever since I have posted on here myself. Things have been very hectic lately as we got caught up in the terrific storms last weekend and were without electricity for several days. Would know that I had 21 eggs in the 'bator when power went off last Friday nite and stayed off...
Actually since I was a boy way back in the '50's and my grandmother would give me little peeps to take home and raise. Seriously tho since the '70's. No farm is complete without a crowing roo at daylite!
Ihave used LG's for years now and for the cost they do work well. I use the auto turners but have not yet added the forced air fan. It is suppose to increase the hatch rate. One thing that did increase my hatch rate was using the dry hatch method. Very little if any water is added 'til the 18th...
I have my incubators in the basement (LG's) and use the "dry-hatch" method and with no water added the humidity averages 45-50%. At lockdown I boost it up to approx. 70% using wet sponges and paper towels. Normally have good hatches. The humidity mentioned is assuming my hygrometer is sot-on...
Norma, Where are you located? I have a few chicks of various ages that are bi-lateral tufted and rumpless but too soon to be 100% sure of the sex. Seems to take forever to sex some Araucana's. Most are blacks and blues. Charlie
This may be a little late response to the "dry-hatch" method question but my hatch rate did improve with my LG's using it. Also no more curley toes . Didn't see any increase in the % of tufted chicks tho! (LOL) Charlie
Netting of that type will not stop them from getting in but they probably won't be able to get out again. You mentioned red fox, grey fox can actually climb trees very well and are at home nationwide. Better to plan on a wire top.
I was not aware that there is a commercial hatchery that does sell genuine Ameraucana eggs. Many will advertize their chciks as such but they are actually EE's. Nothing at all wrong with EE's, I have been raising them for years. My current flock I have had for 12+ yrs. and they lay only blue...
Sega, Nice pics of your little peeps! No doubt you are super proud of the tufted one. They have a look about them that is unique, unlike any other little chickie. Here's hoping you have an even greater hatch tonite...
Has to be a typo error about a Rat Terrier that weighs in at 50 lbs! I 've had several over the years and the largest may have tipped the scales at 15 lbs. They are sharp little(?) dogs and may be trainable for guard duty. I had one that just "went off" and killed my entire flock of ducks. I do...
As it will be exposed to the weather it would be adviseable to use PT wood for all of your run. Because lumber is a commodity and fluctuates so much in price often at Lowe's, Home Depot, etc. there is very little difference in the price of PT and common 2x's. Use PT and don't have to worry about...
Stacykins, Great pics of your chickies! You did get get some nice tufts didn't you? Sir Fluffytuft has enough tuft on the one side to fill out the other side as well! They are all very nice chicks and a great variety of colors. Charlie
