I have 9 Black Australorp hens and 1 Dominique (I think) hen. I got my first egg yesterday, it was so tiny but I was so proud(: I'm just so anxious to see which hen it was and when I'll be getting more eggs!! Want to upload pics but it won't let me!!!
I turned a horse stall into a chicken coop for mine and had the same problem; floor was like a brick it was so compact. I used a thick layer of sawdust (no cedar) and about once a month I'll go in and rake out feathers and the majority of the nasty stuff and then I'll mix up the sawdust, moving...
I don't know what it could be but you might want to seperate the sick chick from the others if possible. It being sick could not only spread it but the other chicks are more likely to pick on it just making it stress more
Hi everybody! In advance, thanks for the help(:
So, I'm converting a horse stall in my barn into a chicken coop. The stall is an 8x10 ft and I'm not sure yet how big I'm going to make the attached run. I have 14 chickens but sadly, I might have to get rid of some since I ended up with 4...
When I went to check on my chicks about a week ago I had a chick dead with a her beak surrounded by a puddle of yellow fluid, wonder if it could be the same thing??
I'm a little confused...are you saying keep Poppy with your new chicks and have two seperate flocks or after a bit of them being together combine flocks?
I think keeping it two flocks would be best. My sis just turned her month old chicks in with her full grown ones and one hen bullied them...
I had one of my chicks kind of act this way after I gave them some grass clippings, I went to check on her one morning and she was laying with her beak in a puddle of yellow fluids. I haven't been able to find anything on the web about it :( . Best of luck
I don't know how reliable this is but I just compared them to my chicks (2 weeks old) and the combs on yours are way smaller than all of mine, including the hens, so my guess is all hens...I guess you'll know for sure when egg time gets here (:
