    Torn toenail to quick

That’s good news. Glad she recovered… guess it just means our Queenie will get some extra TLC for a while 😁

    Torn toenail to quick

I am curious how your hen is now? Has her nail grown back? I have one who has done exactly the same thing on her middle toe. She is hobbling so it must be painful. So far we have tried antiseptic ointment and vet wrap as her foot feels warm to touch compared to the other so I was worried about...

BYC Debate Thread- What's The Friendliest Chicken Breed?

I can’t choose!! I have a bantam Polish frizzle hen called Flossy who is the sweetest friendliest little thing (phots attached). She is always waiting by the back door to come inside. She loves to be petted, and is generally so inquisitive, and so happy to follow you around the garden… it...

Red patch of skin beneath vent on cockerel

Hi Erin. It seems like our cockerel’s skin does go back to normal at times, but then at other times it is red again. I’ve noticed it being red a few times now, and he is nearly 2 years old. I can only put it down to being hormonal as suggested. I do sometimes put a thin layer of sudocrem or...

    Broody Hen Cracked Egg Shell

I have an update.... cracked egg hatched perfectly fine! I was a little worried as the broody was only sat on 2 eggs and the other one hatched first, leaving me on the edge of my seat for half a day! I didn’t do anything with the crack because I was worried about Queenie (the broody) eating or...

    Broody Hen Cracked Egg Shell

Thanks so much I will try that but need to get some plain wax candles. I managed to get a photo and check the egg while the broody was off the nest earlier and it is still alive as of earlier today. This is what the crack looks like...

How did you get on with the egg? Did it hatch?

    Broody Hen Cracked Egg Shell

I have a first time broody Polish bantam hen who we have let sit on 2 eggs. She’s a funny thing (I think most polish are), so she chose the most inappropriate neat box in an appropriate place. We moved her box into the shed and she is happy in the new place but still in plastic nest box. I...

Bantam died, now another is sick

Thank you, and I know you are right on contacting the vets. The problem is that it is a bank holiday here today so most of them are only open for emergencies, and also not familiar with chickens. I have tried the veterinary diagnostics but the phone lines don’t go through, so I’ll get back on...

Bantam died, now another is sick

The symptoms are similar but not the same: Both had a change in voice, and head shaking (and scratching with their toes). They both seem to be struggling with breathing. The bantam that died was gaping with an unpleasant crowing sound which became more frequent as things progressed over the 2...

Bantam died, now another is sick

Thanks for your help. I did look at this, but with the first bantam dying a couple of days ago with “gaping”, I am worried that the Silkie will eventually go the same way, and it happened so quickly that the one who died just could breathe. Although, their symptoms seems to be different at the...

Bantam died, now another is sick

Here’s a couple of photos of her ‘bad’ eye, which isn’t currently bubbly, but is a bit watery and has some crusty discharge. She keeps scratching her face too, and the occasional sneeze. I have found some old antibiotics we had, and I am wondering on dose for a chicken?

@Eggcessive do you have any ideas? Is apple cider vinegar water better than electrolyte water?

Bantam died, now another is sick

I posted a couple of days ago about my booted bantam here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/gapeworm-or-respiratory-please-help.1455753/ Unfortunately, she didn’t make it. Her symptoms of “crowing, gaping” got worse as if her air way was closing up and she passed during the night...

    Gapeworm or Respiratory? Please Help!

From what I have read though, gapeworm can be associated with wild pheasants, and we do get them visiting the area occasionally.
