Meal worms: Super Expensive Form of Protein?

And you know what else.... if you have kids in a formal daycare institution like I didn’t previously (3 kids in daycare actually). I’m happy that monthly bill is gone!! Anyway, we all know that kids under 10 don’t eat anything green SO I spoke with the teachers and they used to give me about 2...

Food location - coop or run?

Hi wild chick, there are 4 holes in the floor where they chewed through the wire. I put cinderblocks over the holes. Once they make the tunnel as you see in the photo, they chew through the wire. I bet tomorrow morning that spot has a hole there. J

    What am I? Ameracauna mix?

Got it from a man here in town who sells all sorts of chickens in his backyard. We were fairly certain it was an Egger but I wanted to poll the masses here too. She cost me $10 which is a steal/deal in my mind.

Food location - coop or run?

Thanks to everyone posting possible solutions. I need to fix my wire Mesh floor holes caused by the gophers, reinstall sand and pebbles to cover it and I will try reducing the food from 24-7 to more of a day time schedule. I’m advocate for “no food, no critters” so I recognize the need to...

Meal worms are EXPENSIVE! Tips for growing my own?

Hi there. Great question and yes it’s a breeze! My neighbor and long time Meal work junkie turned me onto it because I too was once buying mealworms. Answer: as long as you have the sliced potato on the surface of the shavings, the worms and bugs will be lingering around the surface because...

Food location - coop or run?

Hi and thanks. I think you missed the mark here on assuming the coop and run are open all the time. This is my third flock and have learned a lot about taking care of chickens in bobcat, coyote, raccoon, and hawk territory. Where I live, chickens are nearly a primary source of protein for “4...

Food location - coop or run?

Will upload pics. Coop and run are connected and fully contained. The coop itself is a repurposed cedar sauna which is connected to a full enclosed run. THe run is about 30’ long, 5’ wide, 6.6’ tall.

Food location - coop or run?

Hi, I was hoping that someone had advice with placing food in the coop as opposed to the run. Perhaps the varmints are less likely to enter the small opening the chickens go through to get the food. I’ve never put food in the coop and not terribly fond of the idea but if it keeps my run floor...

Food location - coop or run?

One other important factor, the feeders are gravity feeders and are attached to the wall of the run. The food spout is roughly 6-10” off the ground.

Food location - coop or run?

Thanks but please see my other replies with regards to this... My feeders are attached to the wall of my run. They are a gravity feeder system held 6-10” off the floor, holding about 30# each. the gophers are actually chewing through the wire mesh floor (in day time) going in the run and...
