Do my chickens have mites? Feather loss and winter is coming!!

I never see anything moving, just stationary specks which I assume are from the dust bath (soil + sand + wood ash). Nothing moving on them, or me, or their eggs. I’ll keep checking regularly, thanks for the instructions!

Do my chickens have mites? Feather loss and winter is coming!!

Thank you! I see specks, but nothing that ever moves. Not sure if the specks are just from their dust bath.

Do my chickens have mites? Feather loss and winter is coming!!

Hello, I have 12 black sex link hens. This is my first winter with them and most have bald butts and bald spots where their backs meet their tails. They are 7 months old (not old enough to molt?) I supply additional lights and get 10-11 eggs per day. I initially thought they were feather...

    Molting or something else?

Hello, I am dealing with the exact same thing at the moment. First time having chickens: 6 month old hens with feather loss in the same spot. More serious on hens in the bottom of the pecking order. I don’t have cameras so I assumed it was feather pecking. I bought no-pick spray, and I think...

    Protein deficiency or mites??

Thank you for your input! Very informative and helpful. I am seeing the feather pecking now so I think that must be the culprit. 2 have bald patches and the 1 above had a small wound starting. I separated her immediately, and bought some anti-pick spray which I sprayed liberally on the...

    Protein deficiency or mites??

No roosters If it is pecking order, anything I can do to help it stop? Temperatures are going to drop below freezing soon and I don’t want naked birds running around!

    Protein deficiency or mites??

Hello, I know there are many posts asking this type of question… but I just am not sure. Hoping to get some help. My girls are 6 months old (so not old enough to molt, correct?) I have been noticing slight feather loss on some of them for about 2 months. Just looked like fuzzy feathers where...

Topic of the Week - When eggs go wrong

This morning someone forgot the egg white on her first ever egg. Trying her best though!

    Canadians check in here....

I’m happy to hear that you and your animals did alright in that! Lots of articles I read about winter chicken keeping don’t seem to be talking about truly harsh winters. No disrespect to those in who live in milder climates, but I am hesitant to take winter advice from areas where it barely...

    Canadians check in here....

Black Sex Links. Yikes, -50 is just depressing. Did you provide additional heat for them? Mine will be in an insulated room in a barn. Would like to avoid heat if possible due to fire hazards - I’ve been doing my research so will see how it goes.

    Canadians check in here....

Hello from Manitoba! Near Winnipeg. I am new to owning chickens and have a dozen 16 week old BSLs. A bit nervous for our winters - anyone have any experience with BSLs in extreme cold temps? I hear they are pretty hardy which is part of the reason I chose this breed.

Does my run *need* to be a walk-in?

Overdue update, thank you all for your advice! Used materials around the farm to build the covered run with plenty of room to stand up in. Pictured here with the fenced summer yard. Chickens are very pleased and so am I as I find myself in the run with them constantly.

How much wheat is too much?

Hello, feed related question here: I have 12 BSLs who are about 16 weeks. Just started the transition from grower to layer feed. This is my first time having chickens and I am loving it! I also have about 10 feed bags of wheat, saved from a spill during our grain harvest last year. The grain...
