I have 8 roos right now, 5 are free range and will become future dinners when I replace my freezer. My 3 favorites stay in the run with the girls so I have fertile eggs any time I want to hatch and to keep them safe from the predators in my area.
It depends on what schedule you want to have them on.
I have Feeders in an enclosed run, I feed around the same time in the evenings. In winter it's dark and in summer it's not,, It doesn't make a difference to my birds because that's their schedule.
I've had this hen for a few years now and I'm curious what breed she might be. I bought her as a barnyard chick at a flea market and didnt know anything except the chicks were cute lol.
Shes white with little black spots, and white legs. Every egg I've hatched from her has been almost a clone...
My "coop" right now is only a run. Its enclosed on 2.5 sides with tarps to mostly keep the wind and rain out. I've got all sorts of stuff in there for them to roost on and noone has an issue. They've even been sleeping on the ground in chicken puddles.
I had chicken wire for 4 years in 3 different locations with no problems until a raccoon discovered the weakness. I lost half my flock. The rebuild was worth it. 12in 19 gauge hardware cloth.
I had to do the same thing a couple months ago. It wasn't easy and I still feel squicky about it. But it's what had to be done.
We will be doing 4 broilers in another couple weeks. I'm not looking forward to it but my family needs to eat.
