They get about a tablespoon of scratch per chicken plus a few kitchen scraps - maybe 1-2 tablespoons per bird throughout the day. We started restricting treats a few days ago, and "treating" them with their regular feed in the morning (since they expect something on the ground to peck at). So...
I'd be interested in what happens with yours. Our situations sound similar. We also have a drop in egg production (we only have 3 hens, red sexlinks, 1 year old now.). They are down to 0-1 per day for the last 6 days - normally they give 2-3 per day even in the cold part of the winter. The...
Update: (in case anyone is curious what happened next)
Thank you everyone for your help! We relocated the hens to a prefab coop at a ranch 2 miles from our property. The coop is not as good as the one we built, but we reinforced it & followed advice here about enclosing part of the run area...
Thank you! The glass issue really bothers me. There is not a lot of vegetation on our property: It's sandy soil in a pine forest. Before the fire, the chickens wandered around the house, naturally eating dirt (along with the odd dandelion and grasshopper.) There is no way to pick up all the...
Thank you for this idea! We don't have any grass (We're in a Ponderosa forest area), but plowing is a great idea. I think I'll ask for plowing followed by some serious ground-cover plants on top. Once some mulch gets laid down, I hope it will be chicken-friendly again.
It's not harsh, it's reasonable..... But these chickens in this circumstance have a bigger meaning. (I posted on this below). If they survive the winter, I am looking forward to chicken math....
Bless you, yes - with the loss of the dog we want to keep these chickens alive & happy!! The loss of Jake (the dog) was very hard. Even though he was a terrier/pit bull mix he liked and protected the birds when they were out.
A distant future problem is all the broken glass in our old yard...
We have 3 red sexlinks. I love the idea of enclosing at least 2 more sides for them for wind protection. One of my concerns is critters digging through the wood on parts of the coop that don't have hardware cloth. (Do raccoons do that?)
Yes, the enclosed part is 5' X 3'. We hope they...
OOPS! Sorry! Here it is. http://www.ruggedranch.net/wood-chicken-coops.html
It was already set up when we got it. It's the Pueblo Grand one 4th down on this page
UPDATE (and new question): We bought a coop that was pre-built at a decent price since we only have 3-4 days to move them. The coop is called the "Pueblo Grande". (Reading this site, I knew that seller would overestimate # of chickens. This one advertises 5-8 but we have 3.)
(It's the last...
I posted a picture of the current in this thread - the coop was OK while we were 8 feet away and had a dog. (The run is NOT secure, but we would generally be home when they were out in it.) With us 2 miles away, ...
Thank you all so much. I'd been reading this site for a while before joining and knew there were a lot of folks on this site who know a WHOLE lot more than I do. From posts, I see two options, both sound reasonable. It may be that we reinforce the coop and run even more (we were relying on...
I'm intrigued by the idea of a shed. The 8'X8'X8' "yard" (in the picture if it attaches) could be removed and put near a shed so they can come out on nice days. We only free range them when we are with them. That yard is NOT very secure.
What do you think might be a good "footprint" or base...
Thank you for the warning about combining them with another flock...
We may be able to move them to a neighbor across the road (in his 80's), or to our temporary housing, but that would mean getting a new coop or trying to move their current coop - it has hardware cloth / chicken wire buried...
