Coturnix Quail chicks need at least 26% protein feed. It's best to put them on ground up Turkey starter with a high protein content. As a rule of thumb, just don't feed quail anything for chickens. Their nutritional needs are too different. Quail chicks in the wild would normally have the bulk...
The study also said that after the first night, if some hens didn’t show any signs of mothering, they just dropped them out of the study completely. I think this is a vital point that it should only take one night for mothering behaviors to kick in, so don’t be shy and feel free to remove chicks...
I found the coolest study on inducing broodiness in Japanese Quail. Basically, after one night of sitting on a clutch of two, 1-day old chicks, 2-month old quail were able to turn broody—but they nearly killed their chicks the first night and they made shoddy mommas.
However, 8-month old quail...
Hi all,
Been trying to think of ways to market male coturnix quail as pets. I’ve heard they don’t do well in bachelor flocks, but what about male/male pairs?
As long as the perspective pet owner doesn’t have any hens, would that be okay, or would it be a disaster where they fight or mate each...
Oh my god, I love this so much 😭 I feel so strongly that quail should be encouraged to live naturally.
Is there a way you can let the other adult quail see her mothering this chicks without putting mom and the chicks in danger?
Hey quail lovers! I’d like to add a page the r/CoturnixQuail reddit wiki about how to make the perfect environment for a quail to turn broody. So I want to hear all your experiences!
We already know that eggs and tall grass greatly help. Is there anything else you noticed that triggered this...
Thank you! I read it the last time you posted it! I made myself a cheat sheet and just wanted to double-check that I wasn’t crazy.
People talk about Silver/Lavender/Fee as if they are the same thing when they aren’t.
Yes! Exactly. I feel like as a community we need to call this out more. SSC is not the same thing as Lavender and it’s unethical to say so.
Imagine people breeding two quail they believe are lavenders only to get a clutch of dead babies or genetic issues like blindness.
Hey all, I’ve been seeing Silvers marketed as Lavenders or Blues and it’s confusing me. I was under the inpression that Silver (B) was a different gene then Lavender (LAV*L).
Does breeding LAV*L birds also cause genetic issues just like breeding Silvers together would? If not, it seems really...
When my friend first started raising chickens a lot of her chicks died at first. She had a really nice set up so we were all sad to see it. The second time she raised chicks she switched it up and now none have died.
Her first setup was a cardboard box with an open top and a brooder lightbulb...
Not well, though.
“Crosses between male chickens and female Japanese quails using artificial insemination can generate intergeneric hybrids; however, the hatching rate is low and hatched hybrids are only sterile males.”

But my main point is that...
