Got the results back from Zoogen, turns out Ellie is actually a boy. Since he hatched on March 15th we're gonna call him Julius.

    Emu Hatch-a-long 2012

What are you gonna call Theo now that you know? Hoping I can still call my little fuzzball Ellie, still waiting on my results, if it is a boy I'll have to call him Julius seeing as it hatched on the 15th. Such a dainty little thing it's got to be a girl though, and where Gerry was a "PEEP PEEP...

    orphaned emu chicks

Just out of curiosity I looked up the nutritional value of dandelion leaves and apparently they're extremely nutritious and beneficial, lotta stuff in em to give young Emus a great kick start. So by all means, let your Emus weed your lawn for you.

Ditto on that, once they are able to get around well enough and the weather is reasonable you should take them outside and let them follow you around. Show em things like gravel so they can pick up some stones, show em dandelion leaves too, they're very under-appreciated plants and are packed...

    Emu Hatch-a-long 2012

I've put some thought into the whole splay leg issue too. Probably safe to say it's everyone's biggest fear when hatching Emus, it really needs to go away, permanently. As animals grow they actually grow from the center out, the joints are one of the last parts to grow, you can really see...

One more, got Ellie to try eating and drinking today and you can see her up walking around.

    EMU sounds

Gerry is a year old and I've still yet to hear him make a sound other than the little "good morning" squeal he does while stretching when I go out to feed him and the horses, sounds a bit like a toy locomotive. If you want to wait for them to vocalize you may be waiting awhile.

Made an abridged video of my hatch, this time at full speed. She really is a wild one too, quite a personality. She was up and walking around not even 24 hours out of her egg, and she's been running around her cage all day, then she'll flop down and kick her legs in the air before...

I got an E for ya. Looks like I might have a girl here so as Gerry is named after Gerry Harding from Jurassic Park, this new Emu shall be named Ellie. If it does turn out to be a boy he'll be named Eli instead. Her hatch couldn't have gone better, barely even a drop of blood too, all in just...

Course then they get big and it's like "Get off my lap! You're too heavy!" Here's a timelapse of the hatch too:

    Emu Hatch-a-long 2012

I personally did not tape the legs, it's better to just give them a good surface to walk on for the first few weeks and let them exercise naturally. If there's reason to believe there's a problem then taping the legs would be the step to take, it's one of the things I'll be watching for like a...

I put some Vetericyn on the navel, good stuff for wounds and germs without being invasive.

    Emu Hatch-a-long 2012

I had one stay in the egg for 5 days after sounding last year before I went and broke her out myself. She was malpositioned was the problem and couldn't use her beak to pip the shell so all she was doing was straining against it with her feet and getting nowhere, she survived the hatch but...
