    Combined open-air coop and run

Good news! Today I found out that I misunderstood the city's rules for accessory buildings, and I can put in a much larger run than I thought. So now I can go with my first instinct and try to give the chickens more room than 10 sq. feet while still having a combined coop and run. Thank you all...

    Attn: Omelet Run Owners

I'm very grateful for your reply, since I wouldn't have figured this out myself! I'm not sure I understand what you mean by having "a set of smaller ratchet straps connect the stakes making an X, flat against each side of the run." Does this diagram illustrate your set up? The red lines...

    Attn: Omelet Run Owners

I'm thinking about getting a 9' x 12' Omlet walk in run and using tarps all across the roof and to provide shelter on one end. We have a lot of wind here, so we'll need to anchor the run to the ground. Would you mind sharing a photo of how you've anchored your run? I'm not really sure what you...

    Combined open-air coop and run

Thank you for all the helpful advice! I considered building my own coop, but I eventually had to admit I don't have the time or expertise. And hiring someone to build it would be a hassle and much more expensive than the Omlet run. Regarding predators, I'd appreciate your advice on my...

    Combined open-air coop and run

I don't have chickens yet but I'm planning for them. It's very hot in the Dallas area, so I want to do an open-air design. A lot of people recommend 4 sq. feet per bird in the coop and 10 sq. feet in the run. But what if your run and coop are combined in an open-air design? For instance, I'm...

How to convert this chicken tractor into a coop

How much additional shelter do you think would be necessary for the nest box area? The nest box area will be under a roof... the whole coop will be roofed, even though the front half will have hardware cloth walls. I've attached a drawing from a different angle to make this clearer.

How to convert this chicken tractor into a coop

Okay, I'll do that. I'm in North Texas, Dallas area. The tractor in the photo is 8x4, but he also makes 8x6 and that's the one I'm thinking of getting. I'll be enclosing most of the area under the holly trees (see photo above) as a run--I don't know the exact area because it's an irregular...

How to convert this chicken tractor into a coop

Thanks for the tips. I'm glad to hear the deep litter dries for you when it rains. By "side vents" I mean the 1.5' tall panels of hardware cloth at the bottom of each side. So yes, just higher than the nest boxes would be as high as I would go.

How to convert this chicken tractor into a coop

I don't have any chickens yet, but I'm planning to get some. I have a question about a coop. I found someone selling custom chicken tractors on FB Marketplace. Would you look at the photos and tell me if you think it could be adapted into a good coop? What problems do you see with it? It is 8x6...
