Does every flock have a complainer?

I heard one of my girls "Hawk" purr for the first time the other day..... she melted my heart! I was walking from the "back 9" of my yard carrying her and she started to purr when she placed her head on my chest......

    I don't understand

Tntchix..... Ours loves anything smaller than them that moves... I've seen mine go after a small mole, a snake, every spider they can reach (and others they can't) and I have had to refill holes before where they have dug and dug at ant hills! It seemed like I had bugs, then I got chickens, then...

She doesn't have issues eating with her bill like that..... Awesome that she can overcome such a tragedy! My male hurt his leg when trying to outrun a neighbors dog..... leg didn't heal right and is twice the size of the other one, but he still is a male and didn't let him be slowed down by it...

Driest Section of Yard is Now the Muddiest

Gladly!!! :) The pen is a bit primitive right now.....and of course it is raining like mad today... sheesh. We are building a better and much Larger pen towards the rear of the property where that blue bucket in the background is....... And I don't want a repeat of the ground problems...

    I don't understand

The chickens themselves will attract the predators..... that's just natures way. The coop would keep them safer.....

Driest Section of Yard is Now the Muddiest

When we placed our coop, we chose the spot because it seemed to be the "driest".....When it would rain, most of the yard would not dry as fast or as thorough. Now I have the complete opposite problem with that section. Now it NEVER seems to dry out, even during a drought scenario, no matter what...

    I don't understand

Predators..... at least in my "neck of the woods". (Dogs, Wolves, Coyotes, Chicken Hawks, Minks, Opossums and Raccoons to name a few)..... My hens two ducks and two drakes have free run of the fenced in yard during most of the day with plenty of places to hide, but at night they like to go...

Unexpected Eggs in Ohio (Shelf Life??)

The weather have been humid, and I do mean humid, the temps have been around 80F. We learned this morning that one of the girls is "gathering" the eggs into a pile and brooding. No roos all four are hens. The pup in the back has already claimed three of my girls so no eggs for her ;). Thanks...

Unexpected Eggs in Ohio (Shelf Life??)

Labor Day night provided a wonderful Thunderstorm, I went to check on the 4 chicks and 4 ducks first thing in the morning (as is the custom every morning) and noticed 4 beautiful eggs in the chickens hutch. Now comes the issue...... 25 weeks would have put them laying their first eggs around the...

Does every flock have a complainer?

I find that one of my girls is a complainer more so than I originally thought. She 'screams' when I feed them and do not let her free range. (they share a yard with dogs too and I have to make sure they don't meet by accident) She screams when the food isn't to her standards ( I never knew...

Had 5, dog got one and now down to 4 :( For the 6 weeks they were in my house (1-7 weeks old), I held them on average 6-7 times a day. Put them in the bath and even "rescued" one that almost drown and subsequently suffered seizures (he was the one the dog got a hold of) and you know to this...
