    Help! 3 Hens Dead!

Thanks, guys, for all your ideas and suggestions. They really have helped. I assure you, it has nothing to do with the time they are let out. I have let them out at that time every day for the past ten years. There hasn't been a single death because of it. Also, I have a shed over my portable...

    Help! 3 Hens Dead!

I can definitely rig something up, my best bet is that it was a bird of some kind. By the way, the coop is made so the birds are only in it to sleep and lay their eggs. Look up "Justin Rhodes chickshaw" on google and you will know what I am talking about.

    Help! 3 Hens Dead!

Thanks for the info guys, it is helpful. It is hard to believe it was a ground predator though. I forgot to mention, there were no tracks that I could see, plus the area was muddy that day. It makes no sense! Also, there is a problem with locking up my chickens. My coop is a portable, 6 ft x 6...

    Help! 3 Hens Dead!

I have free-range hens and they're let out at 6 am. One day I went out at about 4 pm, and I found 2 dead hens 30 feet from the coop. They had their entire neck and head ripped off. The rest of their body was perfectly fine, and they looked as if they were laying down. The next day I found 1...

    What Breed is This?

My hen is almost two years old now. She has a rose comb and is heavy set. Her head and neck are a light yellow, while her body is white. The tips of her tail feathers are black and she has small dots along the bottom of her neck. She has white legs and lays light brown eggs. I hatched her along...

Hen carrying wings low and wide

My chickens usually do that when it is hot outside. They will start by panting and if that doesn't help them they will spread there wings low and away from their bodies. Just make sure they have enough water and shade, a cool breeze would help too.

    Best Dog for Protecting Flock?

My dog is a border collie, blue heeler mix. We have chickens, cats, goats, and cattle. She goes after the chicks and kittens. But other than that she never bothers any of our animals. But she does need daily contact with humans. Hope this helps some.

    HI!

I am new to Backyard Chicken but I have been wanting to join it forever! I live in Nebraska on my family farm. We have cattle, goats, and of course chickens. I have 62 chickens (51 are chicks). I have had chickens since I was 8 and I am now 14. I just started selling 2 dozen eggs a week to my...
