About a week ago, our Silkie, who is lame, had what appeared to be a mating injury on her back - feathers missing, etc. We have too many aggressive roosters; they are getting ready to be harvested.
Two days ago, her back was torn open, so we isolated her and treated it with hydrogen peroxide...
Hi, everyone,
My 18-ish week old Silkie hen has just started laying, and now she's limping. She's been attracting a lot of attention from our roosters. She's the first of our girls to start laying, so she's the center of attention right now...
She's been favoring her left leg for several...
This girl is one of our Meyer Meal Makers; she's a layer, but I have no idea what breed. Thoughts? She's the lighter brown one in the middle. The others are our Dominiques and Buckeyes. They're all about 11 weeks old.
This is off-topic, but, Losttexan, I LOVE your signature!! It is just completely awesome. <<--- Tolkien fan here
On topic: I have a couple of 11-week-old cockerels that are starting to act like punks. They have until they reach fryer weight to get their acts together; otherwise, they'll be...
I picked up these Welsummers and Silkies from TSC about 2 weeks ago. At the time, the clerk said she "thought" the Welsummers were about 2 weeks or so, and the Silkies were 3 or so. The Silkies were actually marked down to $1 because they were getting too old.
I have Buckeye chicks that I am...
So you don't think the lights would work either?
And what does a surveillance camera do for me? I already know what's out there. I just want to keep it away.
Update: The TSC chicks didn't have pasty butt and are doing just fine. In fact, they're downright sassy.
I did have a couple of chicks have pasty butt the day after they arrived from the hatchery, but they seem to be doing fine now.
Thanks for the reply, Chickengeorgeto. I should have known that about the pee, but I had been reading the hype on one website...d'oh. Should have gone with the adage, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."
I may try the lights. That seems to make the most sense.
I should also add that our coop is solidly built, and we have a covered run. The chickens will only free range under supervision. I just am interested in adding another layer of protection.
