    Odd Behavior

One of my chickens is sort of displaying broody behavior but I'm not sure if that's it exactly. She stays in the nesting box nearly all day. She will come out for food and water, briefly. She makes this soft "cluck, cluck" noise constantly. I thought she was broody but since she's in the...

Introducing new pullets and 2 Roosters to 4yo flock

Here's my problem...the big girls refuse to come out and free range. I have tried evening after evening to leave the door wide open but they absolutely refuse to come out. I tried putting one of the little one's in with them (I stayed in there with her) but she wanted out within seconds...

Introducing new pullets and 2 Roosters to 4yo flock

Thank you for the advice. We do have grandchildren, all under 3yo, and when I realized I had roosters, my grandchildren were my first thought. I like how you described the darling stage and I understand it can get bad quickly. From now on, I'm only going to get chicks that are old enough for...

Introducing new pullets and 2 Roosters to 4yo flock

Thank you for the advice - I really appreciate it. It hurts to consider rehoming one of the boys because they are both such friendly little guy's. But, I understand what you are saying, they are young now. Thanks again!

Introducing new pullets and 2 Roosters to 4yo flock

A total of 14 birds - 8 that are 4yo and 6 that are 4mo. Our coop is 10'x8' and the runs are 12'x16' and 8'x8' Thank you for the cockerel vs rooster explanation. That explains why I had trouble finding an answer from previous forum posts since I was searching rooster rather than cockerel. Very...

Introducing new pullets and 2 Roosters to 4yo flock

I got six new chicks on 4/18/24, and it turns out two of them are roosters. I have kept all of the young one's separate from my older flock of 4yo hens but their coops line each other on one side so they've been getting to know each other through the fence. My initial worry when introducing...

    Rooster and Breed?

I had taken photos of the signs on the bins the day before I got the chicks so that I could research the breeds. Just looked at the photos of the signs and sure enough, Easter Eggers were in the bin next to Australorps. Guess he did jump or get mixed up somehow.

    Rooster and Breed?

Thank you for the quick responses! It's definitely a disappointment that he's a mixed breed. We got our first batch from McMurray's a few years ago and the one's in April from our local feed store. I've never had two roosters at one time. I hope this works out. Thanks again!

    Rooster and Breed?

I bought six new chicks in April. All were supposed to be hens but I ended up with 1 rooster. Then the chicken below started crowing recently. It's a pathetic crow and we thought she was just trying to imitate our rooster but now I'm starting to think differently. She was also supposed to be...

Geese dumped close to our property

UPDATE: A few days after the geese were dumped, I met a lady who owns a wildlife refuge ranch about an hour from us. Her ranch hand came the next day and got the geese. He was so excited. They have a pond and he was already planning a big playground and safe enclosure for them. Happy Ending!

Geese dumped close to our property

Oh my! My little 3-legged rescue dog might not have a chance.

Geese dumped close to our property

Thank you so much for your quick reply and advice. We are seriously considering keeping them and are looking into a good place to provide shelter at night. I do have a concern about how the geese would interact with my dog. He is a Jack Russell but does not act like one at all. He's a rescue...

Geese dumped close to our property

These two geese were dumped last night just across from our property. The little bridge they are on leads to our property and fortunately they found the water rather than go the other direction towards the street. I have taken them some food to them and I feel so sorry for them. I know...
