I figured as much, I have so so much to learn. But I am all in on breeding the best quality birds I can. I have an unexplainable urge to win a show with a bird I bred.
I have thought about breeding him back to some nice black copper hens just to see what he’d throw, but I don’t want to get myself in trouble with passing down that comb. I really would like to get my birds in the show halls one day. The comb may be really easy to fix, i’m just not sure on what...
The only way I could tell you for sure is if they come from birds in color separated pens. The dark one looks like a chocolate though, the others could be very smutty buffs (lots of black leakage). I am not a silkie expert though, this is just my best guess.
I'd say ameraucana cross, I'd also say that the pea comb and small muffs would indicate that she probably inherited a blue egg gene too. That's not guaranteed though
I won’t be breeding with the cockerel, I know he has big color and comb issues. Just looking for a good example of Marans type in my flock to compare to
Thoughts on the type of this Blue Copper cockerel - he's just a little over 5 months old (23 weeks). Also, any thoughts on this really young Black Copper pullet(10 weeks), and this Splash Pullet (23 weeks). Really trying to get a grasp on what type I should be looking for with the breed.
I had 4 other blue cockerels, but I culled them all for yellow feet. He’s the only one that somewhat fit the standard. Here are some more pics from today, he’s a little over 5 months old (23 weeks).
I know his color is wrong, but I'm really just trying to get a grasp on what the correct type to look for is, and I think this guy has nice type. Correct me if I'm wrong
