Apparently I'm doubling down on the broody situation.
This is Reese she just turned 7 months today. She's one of the 2nd gens from Sweety my favorite pullet. And she is also apparently my white egg layer, all the eggs under her 7-8 are all white.
She's been sneaking into the side yard laying...
No I don't weigh the chicks, but I can't tell the double yolker from the rest of the chicks at this point unless I check the color of the legband. Just after hatch it had a very distended belly. I presume it was the second yolk being absorbed.
There's two problems that come to mind.
My mixes, from the eggs she's sitting on, can look like anything and they might get mixed up with the purebreed chicks.
The second problem is, she isn't the friendliest girl in the bunch, so I don't know how she'll behave once they hatch.
She hasn't moved all day. My son and I are gonna raid the nest and see how far along they are by candling. I'm debating on letting her keep a few to see how she does.
Just as I'm rounding the corner of a very long hatch-athon (1 hatch to go) . . . I go to do a nightly yard check . . . and what do I find?
. . . This is Socka one of my Black Jersey Giant pullets.
I recently removed a saddle from this poor girl and the boys made short work of the featherers...
The double yolker was making me nervous since I couldn't tell if there were two chicks.
I made a good bit of progress, but it seems there's only one giant chick.
