Sorry I haven't checked in in months... a broken and torn shoulder last spring followed by surgery has meant typing has been off the agenda for a while.
Thought I'd check in and see how everyone's rhodebar breeding programs are going and post a few pics from my most recent hatch.
Hope everyone's...
Hmm... my Underwoods started laying at 26 weeks and I had chicks in the ground before they were 30 weeks old. That said, it was fall/winter, so temps were cool. I never hatch after April. It's a waste of time because it throws off POL and makes for slower growth rates.
So I agree, it could...
This is a beginner genetic color chart I give rex folks. But genotypes apply to all breeds (sometimes a different name though). If it isn't self explanatory just ask questions.
Have you considered slats instead of wire? They get more forage with properly placed slats and it eliminates the likelihood of broken toe nails as they scratch and dig
All of my buck cages line a totally different wall than where my does are. This prevents bucks from spraying the does to mark them and several other issues. Sometimes the bucks get jealous and stomp when one is breeding, but otherwise they are fine next to each other. Does like...
Each of my bucks has his own cage. A doe is brought to him for breeding. Takes about 5 minute. By the time he falls off several times, my coffee is finished and the doe is taken out. QED
Does frequently live in pairs or trios until their first kindling but their their own suite after that.
The Knoxville new ordinance a few years ago we put through was actually pretty easy. Chattanooga had many more hops to go through. We have built a variety of chicken tractors for people in west Knoxville and provide them with new pullets every 2 years. Has worked well and none if the HOA...
I think I shared these once before, but thought I'd share another blast from the past. My great grand father bred and showed RC RIR in the first half of the 20th century until the late 40s. He had a large poultry house next door to his house in IL. His name was CF Haffey (Carl Frederick)...
I have rose comb Underwood just an hour north of Chattanooga. I have 100-150 chicks on the ground from 4 different breeding pen trios but won't be parting with any until at least July. (June 9th shoulder surgery will prevent me from going thru birds until then). They should begin laying at...
Well ironically, I would choose AmChins for meat pens. We have raised NZ, rex and amchin and our Amchin have better growth and dress weights than either of the other two.
Consequently we no longer raise NZ, only chins and Rex. Your rex are about 1-1.5 lb lighter than chins
