Thanks all!
Legbands - yes, I'd thought of that.
I'll consider the fencing. I've been mulling it. I've got about 6 months before I have to come up with a solution one way or another.
Hi all, need some advice/opinions.
Later this year, we'll be moving out of Austin to a five acre property in the country. At our current home, our ladies have the run of the fenced in back yard - there's not much of a worry of dogs/coyotes getting them, just maybe hawks (and in five years...
I also use the Chicken Guard door, for about a year now. No issues with it at all. Girls are happy they don't have to wait for me to let them out any more.
Took her to the vet. "Deep ulceration and infection" "Eye irreparably damaged" "Eye could rupture at any time"
Choice was $900 surgery (with additional outlay of expense antibiotics) or $150 euthanasia with cremation. I opted for the euthanasia.
Thank you @Wyorp Rock, @Eggcessive, and...
Update: Picked her off the coop perch to give her they neomycin, and found the her eye appears to be swelling and pushing out of her head - it's twice the size of the other, and it's now forcing her lids open.
Tumor?
Update - caught Peach (she was very indignant about being manhandled).
@Wyorp Rock, we couldn't find any foreign object - just mucus that was wiped away.
My wife did the lens wiping with the q-tip - there's definitely something covering her eye, but whatever it is won't lift off. While...
Been there with the bumblefoot routine.
Ok - will follow the advise of Dr. Eggcessive and Dr. Coach723, and will try the wipe and neosporin treatment. Will also check tonight for foreign object that Wyorp was asking about.
Taking the q-tip to rub her eye - how much rubbing should I try...
Thank you, @Eggcessive.
Twice a day would be tough - even blind in one eye, she's hard to catch. We've been grabber her at bed time when she's perched. :)
No, I haven't. It's not gooey. I rubbed her eyelid over it, remained the same. I don't want to injure her eye, so I figured I'd ask here.
No bad smell around her
No wheezing, coughing, or sneezing
She's a little slow, isn't racing out in the morning with her 2 flock mates. But when I toss...
Neither my wife nor I (that's me hold Peach) recall seeing an foreign objects, but we'll check again. I find it odd that it appears her eye has a coating over it - you can see a dark spot that appears to be her iris/cornea and pupil. A few days ago it was the normal color.
Here's the pic
Is that something over her eye? I've seen pics/videos of Coryza where there was a yellow substance over the eye (nasty), but she doesn't appear to have any of the other symptoms. Three days ago her eye was just fine.
One of my hens (2 years old or so) has one eye shut. She's out and about, but mostly just sits.
We picked her off the roost last night (that's the only way you're going to get close to her), and took a look at her eye. It's tight shut, lightly crusty. Wearing nitrile, gloves, I gently pulled...
Two of my girls have been broody for the past two months now - it's blazing hot here in Austin, and even if I cage them, they won't cool down. I brought one of them inside in the air conditioned house in the broody buster cage. She started to snap out of it, cooing again instead of...
