Well it finally happened and now wanting to add to my flock

Thanks, Folly's place! I have never culled a chicken nor plan to unless like you said, they're really sick. i couldn't eat Thelma or Lucy, LOL. Not keeping them for eating, just for the rest of their natural lives but i sure miss the eggs. So you don't think CL would a good idea? i wouldn't...

Well it finally happened and now wanting to add to my flock

Thanks both for your reply! Well, putting a mesh in the run will be easy, it is a dog house probably 6' x 8', plenty big and it has 2 entrances to the run so i could run a mesh through the middle no problem, they can see each other but not reach each other. The run is concrete but i have it...

Well it finally happened and now wanting to add to my flock

i rescued 4 hens a few years ago from a drug house across the street. Had NO knowledge about chickens at all but did the best for my hens and they lived a good life. One we found dead in the coop in March i think (she was fine when she went in so i don't know what happened, i suspect these hens...

My hen started laying again after a year??

One of my Easter Eggers just started laying again and she seriously did not lay for at least a year, otherwise healthy though. I don't know how old she or my other two hens are, they were rescues almost 3 years ago and laying then. Why would she not lay for at least that long and then all of...

Do i really want to add to my chickens??

I have what i think is a golden Laced Wyandotte (Lucy) and she regularly lays double eggs. However Susie was the champion layer!

Do i really want to add to my chickens??

Oh my gosh, you are describing Susie to a T. Egg laying machine like a champ. At least she had a great life and was happy at least that i saw, until the very end. I always knew this was coming (loss of first chicken) but i'm holding up well, it's still sad.... They're my pets also and i eat...

Do i really want to add to my chickens??

So, i rescued grown 4 laying hens almost 3 yrs ago, they were abandoned, i knew absolutely nothing about chicken keeping but i learned. I have no idea how old they were but they appeared vigorous and healthy. They are free range but in a secure coop and run overnight and part of the morning...

Input on coop and run materials, please

I have 4 hens that i rescued a year ago. They have a large wood dog house for a coop that leads to a run encased in hardwire and chain link fence and a roof. The coop is filled with pine shavings and the run floor is concrete and i've provided a kiddie pool filled with dirt (and now will mix...

Help, one of my hens has a messy back side

Posting some ugly pictures here, sorry about that, i had to take them with flash when she was on her roost as she not keen about me holding her but she developed this maybe a week ago, i had thought a broken egg was stuck to her backside when she was laying but the mess persisted and most of it...

    FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

Before you flame me to hell, i know this pertains to humans BUT it is something to very carefully consider. This isn't just speculation, it has been documented. I do FF but i want to carefully examine all the facts and i'm wondering if anyone has FF their flock LONG TERM and seen any...

    FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

Well the reason for getting up early again is to have no food out for the rats to get into, had been putting food in at night so i wouldn't have to get up, i think i'd rather have no food out and get up early than to have rats in there with the hens. NASTY things.

    FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

UGH, there are rats in my hen coop, droppings and what looks like some food hoarding on the headboard of the 2 doors leading out to the run. NO WAY is there to keep them out. What's weird is it looks like they've been taking the FF and putting it on the board HOW i don't know but it's...

    FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

Agree with this, when i add water it covers and i mix it well and it turns into probably cookie dough consistency (not dry but moist) and it ferments fine, my girls don't like it sloppy

    FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

Thanks! i will be excited about building them and keeping feed from being knocked out over my yard and molding!! Oh i was talking about FF, not dry pellets. I've been feeding FF since the Summer and there are plenty of lament threads from me about how they were less than enthusiastic about...
