Pasty butts, the best way to clean and manage

I had good luck with the "chick spa". Found a plastic bowl with high sides, filled it with warm water, submerged the chick's backside in the water, the hardened poo would start to fall away, anything left behind I used a throw away toothbrush to gently brush off. The chicks would be slightly...

    Traumatized Chicks

Mediazeal, thanks for the idea, I kept the A-frame that I used for day outings when they were really small, I think I'll put that outside of their run near where I will be working in the yard today and see how they like that, maybe a different location will brighten their outlook. Thanks everyone.

    Traumatized Chicks

Earlier I posted about the terrible day my dog killed 8 of our 6 weeks old chicks. Well the remaining 4 are still frightened, it has been 5 days since the massacre. My girls won't spend time outside the coop even though the past days have been 90+ degrees, I got desperate enough and physically...

I live in Central Wisconsin. What is a good breed for my climates?

Hi there, I live right on the border of WI & IL and from the research I've done Rhode Island Reds are winter hearty, good layers and they are awful pretty to look at. Around Easter time Farm & Fleet as well as Tractor Supply sells day old chicks, just FYI. Good luck!

Our dog just killed 4 of our chicks *UPDATE*

Thank you for all of your kind words, we are still missing 3 chicks and to be honest I've started to accept that they are gone for good. I've searched the surrounding forest and found NO evidence of remains, but who is to say they weren't carried off somewhere? My 4 surviving chicks still will...

Our dog killed 5 of our RIR

Well, Tess (GS mix) is a part of our family and she knows that she is still in the "dog house". Tess will not go near the chicken coop fence at this point but DH and I have learned a sharp lesson, we are hoping the shock of the electric fence will cure further intrusion. Boy, we were thinking...

Our dog killed 5 of our RIR

It was a sad day yesterday, our sweet German Shepherd mix turned into a killing machine and destroyed at least 5 of our RIR. My DH rescued 1 chick, 3 others emerged from the forest hours later, there is still no evidence of the remaining 3. Does anyone think it possible that they survived the...

Our dog just killed 4 of our chicks *UPDATE*

Well, what more can I say? Out of the 12, we only have one in our coop, who is in shock. The other 7 we haven't been able to find in our multi- acre forest. They are 6 weeks old, does any one think if they are still alive they will return to the coop? How long will a single chick survive...

    Odd Chick behavior

Granted, this is my first year raising chicks but I find this behavior a little odd. My chicks are 3 weeks old and I've been using paper towels on the bottom of their brooder dashed with some pine shavings, the amount of, I have systematically increased (read in that may help prevent cocci)...

    Pastey Butt Treatment

Thanks so much for the spa suggestion! Although my chicks weren't as pleased with their adventure as I had hoped, the dried poop fell away quickly and there wasn't any pain for the protesting chick. Have you heard of any solution that would put an end to the crusties? or do I simply have to...

Crushed oatmeal for the pasty bottoms

Hi! New to raising chicks, they are 1 week old today, and I've read that crushed oatmeal (processed in my spice grinder) added to their feed helps with the runny poop. If all else, they LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the uncooked oatmeal. Main question is how often can I feed this to them and do I need to...
