    Salmonella outbreak

People get sick because they eat their eggs sunny-side up and over-easy (I like mine almost raw, personally). They eat custard that is undercooked and hollandaise sauce (me too). Raw egg gets on counter surfaces in restaurants and homes, and the salmonella spreads to other foods being prepared...

Can my neighbour kill my chickens?

Please stay away from people with "anger management problems." We value your contributions here, and would not like you to have it out with someone like that. It sounds like this person may have been required by the law to take an "anger management course" which he failed, but at which he...

    Never had duck!!!

Hmmm, with that many people to feed, I might roast the duck then glaze it with an orange sauce and serve just a few pieces over rice, with a veggie stir-fry side dish. Oh yeah- roasting a duck in your oven makes a HUGE mess. Duck grease everywhere. But it tastes so good it's worth it!

I shall not covet my neighbor's chicken

A silver-spangled Hamburg pullet. Big, dark, soulful eyes, sweet as can be, loves to be cuddled. She batts her eyelashes at you when you coo at her. Sigh.

    !! Day Two!!

Here's Larry: You can count species and numbers, City Girl. You probably only have one or two families of cardinals in your yard, if they are at all similar to other birds that size.

    !! Day Two!!

We'll be counting here in Simi Valley, CA on Sunday. Saturday at our buddy's house in Northridge, Ca. Every year our count includes Larry, a feral Goffin's Corella who has lived with the local flock of crows for over 20 years. Live Free or Die, Larry! Renee

meanest looking chicken pictures(meanest wins) ends June 20th

Buc scared me. And that Malay would make a great watch-chicken. I'd walk a block out of my way to avoid going past your house.

My first flock - how's this list sound?

My Wyandottes are very nice pets and good strong layers all winter, but they don't like the Southern California heat. Once it gets up above 95 degrees for a week at a time they stop laying. I would avoid flighty or Mediterranean breeds if you have very close neighbors. My Campine was loud...

    Prettiest Breed?

What spectacular birds you all have- how tough to choose! I LOVE the shape and head of Sumatras. They look like exotic jungle birds to me. I have to say, though, that I saw a photo of a Silver Spangled Hamburg rooster that just about knocked my socks off. My favorite color at home is the...

    Thin Chickens

My Columbian Wyandotte has a prominent breastbone, but my Silver-Laced does not. I think it can just be an individual characteristic- not a sign of undernourishment.
