Thanks so much for weighing in! I was hoping someone with SAs would comment. I have some breeding experience but my first time with birds, so I was thinking that color would most likely be easier to fix than size. Good to get some confirmation on that.
In September, I ordered 10 SA chicks. 4 drakes and 6 hens. Unfortunately 1 hen died in shipping and another hen (looked weaker than the others) didn't make it through the first night).
They're almost 8 weeks old, and I planning to cull the 2 worst drakes at 12 weeks. The final cull will be...
In the brooder on September 24, in their coop on October 23, and walking around today November 3 (6 weeks and 2 days old). Seeing how fast they grow is incredible!
They're Silver Appleyards. Does anyone know when the blue will start showing on their wings?
It's pretty easy to remove and light enough that you can just put a new panel on top or cut a section to patch over damage. Some of the panels (and most of the other materials) were repurposed from a mobile chicken run we took down. The panels had been in use for over a year and were still...
I looked at JR's recipe and I don't have enough birds to justify buying a $200 bag Poultry Nutrient ... I believe the manufacturer ratio was 1 bag per 1000 lbs. 🤣
I have had to tweak my feeding program here and there, but the goal is always to give them a solid base food with a lot of healthy...
How big is your chicken run and do they have access to fresh grass? I would look more into incorporating more forage opportunity into your run before I changed their diet that drastically. I plant comfrey (about 19% protein) around my bird pens. Yesterday, I sowed peas (20% protein)...
You might have better luck on Facebook. I'm a member of several animal and pet groups for my state and county/city area. There are always people willing to do re-home. You can also try your local for sale or yard sale Facebook group for any takers.
Today's progress so far. Just need to finish the roof, drop the shavings, and set up the food and water stations! The shady side of the coop, which is East facing, will be all translucent panels.... because ducks need to enjoy the sunrise lol. The back side will get a row of wood board on the...
We have one of those Premier1 poultry fences. My dogs tested it few times the first day, but now they won't go near it. It's pretty easy to set up. Ours is solar powered and we've never had an issue running out of power in the past 6 months.
It's 102 sqft. We have 8 ducks, which we'll be evaluating over the next few months and culling down to 5 (4 hens and 1 drake) for our breeder program. We ultimately hope to keep 12-16 of our best layers and breeders in that pen. But we also have a separate breeding/brooding pen so the numbers...
We can see the light at the end of the tunnel. The duck coop is almost done! Our babies are 4.5 weeks old and we can't wait to get them into their space. It looks like a palace next to the chicken tractor lol.
I just got started with 8 ducks last month. They are 4-week-old Silver Appleyards, and their big, permanent pen should be ready in a few days. We're keeping them in the front yard right now so we can keep a closer watch.
We're starting a breeding program for a small homestead. There should be...
I'm in the middle of finishing our duck pen and coop for our 3 week old ducks to move into. We have 8 and want to have 12-16 in our permanent flock. I live in central Georgia so the climate is mild and rarely freezes... almost never snows. My property is in town so there are not many...
