Sorry for the thread jack, these are thumbnails, click for bigger. The pic of the pair is from May 15, then May 20 and the one standing up is from about 10 minutes ago. In the last pic, the silverlights are the one standing and the one laying next to the barred rock. I actually thought they were...
My barred rocks like to peck people, but have no problems with any of my other birds, and I've got a bit of a mixed flock. 2 BR, 2 RIR, 2 Light Brahma, 2 Silverlight Green Eggers.
The silverlights have very small eggs compared to the RIR. Only ones I know to be laying at the moment.
Sorry, life got in the way and I kinda forgot about this thread until today when I came to post that I'm starting to get eggs.
I am running on the assumption that it is just too hot for them inside the coop at night. It's been so long now that they've been sleeping on top of it that it just...
It's up to 5 of them spending the night outside. I've been busy, haven't been able to get an in the coop shot.
I even added fresh bedding today.
Watching them, it appears the roosters are pecking and scratching the hens that do want to go inside for treats at lockup time, so I guess they're...
I have thought about her doing it to try to establish dominance of the group, like "haha I'm further up than all of you".
There's quite the pile of poop behind her, she stays in the same spot right next to the rope that opens the door. It all looks normal, and all day long she's with all the...
4x6, 6 feet high sloping to 5. 2 roosting bars 2x4s, one at 18inches high one at 36, the 18 is a foot from the back wall, the 36 is a foot or so from the 18.
They all completely ignore the roosting bars, and sleep huddled up on top of the feeder, or in the window at the very top of the coop...
I only got my flock the end of February, so none of my chickens are laying yet. To me that rules out broodiness, but I'm no expert.
So about the hen in question is about 3 months old. This past week, she's decided she wants to spend the night on top of the coop instead of inside with everybody...
It was moving day today. They're all outside in their coop now. Now I really need to get the run built.
I left the door open all day. The only one who even went up to the door was the Barred Rock that had been repeatedly escaping the kennel inside. Nobody went down the ramp to the grass today...
I guess I was worried about nothing. I just put a 4 gallon bucket with 2 horizontal nipples into the kennel with the girls. After 2 minutes of climbing on top of each other in the opposite corner, one barred rock walked up and started pecking at a nipple and now they're all doing it.
That's what I'm going to get too, probably next week. I need to build their run yet is the thing. Too many things have come to a head at once. They're getting too big, bored, and messy inside, so getting them into the coop comes first, then fixing the brakes on my truck so I have room to paint...
I'm moving my 4 week old chickens to their coop this weekend. They need the space at this point. I keep reading about locking them in for 2 weeks to make them think it's home, and to do that I need to put food and water in there with them.
I don't want to keep using the mason jar feeders in...
Well I'm sticking with the single roost. Regardless, they'll have more room than they would at Purdues farm, so they can be happy or they can suck it up.
Keep in mind this will start with 3 inches of bedding and get deeper as needed until I have to clean out. After their 2 week lock down...
How many roost bars should I put in my coop?
I'm trying to get everything squared away as I'm painting today, and right now I have a single roost bar. It will be about 15"above the floor and is 6 feet long. I feel like I should have a second one another foot higher, but I'm not sure.
Should be...
I started mixing grit in with mines food at 3 days. They wanted nothing to do with hardboiled eggs, scrambled eggs, or mealworms, but I wanted to start the grit early. At about 10 days old they started going nuts for meal worms and egg.
Today is 2 weeks since I bought them and they live when I...
