    The Wyandotte Thread

I finally was able to get some pics of my babies.... This one is my GLW Bantam: [/img] Here are my two hatchery SLW, pretty sure the light one is a roo. I am still holding out a small glimmer of hope that I am wrong. If I am right, I am probably going to have to find a home for both of them...

Light yolk color on freshly layed eggs???

That had happened with my girls too, once their yard died, their eggs went to yellow. I started letting them out into the main backyard to help with the earwigs and get some greens. I also pick up the "expired" greens from our local Fresh and Easy for half off and give it to them every night...

    Miracle- Hello! guinea/chicken crossbreed

I just started following this thread on Friday. Even though it has only been a few days, I have already become attached to Miracle. I am sorry for your loss, but be assured that you gave Miracle the best life she could have during this short time. She is now running around without getting worn...

    The Wyandotte Thread

My last SLW, she was never broody, but she never made it to her first birthday (stupid racoons), she was a hatchery hen, but was beautiful (at least to me!) She had an excellent laid back personality and would let us pick her up and carry her around. However, she was a little bossy with the...

    earwig control

If you have a garden of any type, you need to worry. We are absolutely over run with earwigs this year. Anytime a rose blooms, it looks like swiss cheese within a day or so. I had a healthy milkweed plant one day, the next it had been eaten down to the stalks. They did so much damage to it, the...

Lost 3 dozen chickens in less than 48hours

Do you have coyotes in your area? They are known to grab their food and run, and more are hunting during the day now. They have learned that humans put their pets up and night, so they hunt for them during the day. One afternoon, I had a feeling I wasn't alone, and sure enough in the avocado...

THey are all DEAD... and it was my own dog

Doh! I 've been there catching them in the act, that's tough. Especially when it involves rounding up six little baby opossums, but that one was just a close call. I would never assume someone was going to mistreat their dog unless I witnessed the way they treated their dog or if they flat out...

THey are all DEAD... and it was my own dog

@ fancbrd4me02, that is excellent advice! My mom was a trainer for many years, and when I read your post, it sounded just like something she would say! What part of SD are you in? We are slumming it out in East County...lol @ Dar, a good way to think of how your dog's brain works, its like...

How Often Should You Feed Your Flock?

I would start by splitting it up and then work from there. If its working for you and your hens...then go for it, if not change it up until it works. Just an idea...

How Often Should You Feed Your Flock?

Quote: Very well said! I couldn't agree more. @ Peaches:Are the vets you working with experienced with chickens? Where I live we have none...

Give me a taste of what I'm missing

Quote: What part of So Cal are you in? We are in Lakeside, about 25 mins east of San Diego. We have neighbors who have goats and cows! There is a house across the street from the elementary school that even has emus! We love the quiet and the ability to be able to do our own thing without...

How Often Should You Feed Your Flock?

Ours are free range, and they have access to food and water 24/7. From my experience, all chickens do is eat and poop! Then when they have time, they will lay an egg!

Official BYC Poll: The Worst Predator

Quote: The payoff is so much greater than the risk! We have had our hens over a year now, and we have only lost one and that was due to my husband procrastinating on finishing the coop. He felt so bad about it, it was immediately finished. If you have a good, secure coop and if necesary, a...
