here are some photos of our silver ameraucana roo. lots of blue/gray as a chick, although the pictures don't do a good job of showing the vibrancy of his colors
a week old, 5 weeks old, and 22 weeks.

One of my Buff Orphington's laid our first egg this morning. I saw her sitting in the nesting box when I went out to say good morning, so I just turned around and let her be. When I checked back in an hour, voila! She's 22 1/2 weeks. Now if her 4 sisters follow suit, I'll be in good shape...

No, this is another case of a dog walking OUT OF an unobstructed yard. Ticks me off to no end that everybody blames the chicken owner for not having a dog-proof fence, rather than the dog owner. And in situations like mine, fencing 7 acres would cost me thousands more that it would cost...
Most people I would talk to about my chickens would already understand. I had a lot of "city" friends come out for a barbecue a few years back. When I told them ahead of time that it would be a pit bbq with one of my own hogs, there were mixed reactions. Most were interested in the process...
If your run is truly predator proof, there is no issue with leaving them out. If you use substandard materials and flimsy wire, it's only predator deterrent. Predator proof also requires LOCKING mechanisms, not hook and eye latches.
That being said, I leave my chickens out at night in my...
this thread already has crossed the cannibalism line, so i'll toss in my .02
chickens dont care what they eat, we're the ones projecting our virtues and values on them. most animals will eat their own kind.
try to be discrete as i can while talking about the subject, but..
as a kid...
mines kind of large (5x10), and not completey tractorized yet, but you can follow my build up here. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=182554
it will be a tractor, i'll have a rod which goes through the bottom 2x6 and i'll lift the coop, slide the wheels on, move it, and...
it'll be fine. if the ground above your leach field is soggy, then you've got bigger issues than where to put the chicken coop! having a few chickens struttin around on it wont hurt it in the least.
leach fields do just that, leach the effluent water back DOWN into the ground water. you...
OSB is very cheap and comes in 3/8, 1/2, etc. this wood is made from chips, pressed together and held with glue. It MUST be kept dry, either by paint, and then more paint each year as the chips will 'flake off'. OSB tends to absorb moisture very readily, and then expands and 'flakes'. The...
Okay, despite the 106 degrees outside today, I went ahead and put the roof on. Here are some pictures of the tin on. still need to cool coat, but Steph is the painter and she's not here. Tin was scrap we had laying around.
ugh, i really need to get the back doors on the storage area, it's...
growing up we had a lot of fruit trees and 20 or so free rangers, along with geese, ducks, turkeys, dogs, cats.. never had any issues with them burning our trees, they're rather generous in their distribution of poo. the only concentrations i ever found were on the front porch!
they didnt mess...
anything is possible. i dont see why that wouldnt work, you may just have to get creative in joining the two together. chickens, i've found, arent as critical of their living arrangements as we picky humans.
good luck!
Depending on the size of your yard and whether they will be able to range or remain penned up in a run will play a large part in the size of your coop, as well as how comfortable you want your chickens to be..
How are your construction skills? Do you have a shady yard, or bare dirt?
the...
Thank you for all of the positive comments. m2wandc, our coops do look alike. My original design was based heavily on La Cage Mahal https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=10059 after browsing through the coop pages at some length. I've made a few modifications like the sideways...
Here are a few pictures of my tractor in progress. i'm central arizona, dry but hot hot hot. i'll be adding a fan to keep air moving during the summers. it's a tractor, so i'll move it into the shadier parts of the yard during the hot parts of the year as well. i'll also be cool coating the...
