Whenever I go to France, I ALWAYS order a Bresse chicken when I see it on the menu. They are great tasting birds. I asked around to try and get some eggs, and was politely told that it was impossible. The French are rightfully protective and proud of these excellent meat birds.

I had the same idea of a bucolic vegetable garden with the hens pecking at weeds and ridding my garden of troublesome insects. Instead, they not only eat everything in sight (including beneficial insects and worms) but they scratch up the plants that they don't eat and fling dirt everywhere (my...
Sounds to me like the chicken was in distress - physical distress, not emotional. That 4H leader was wrong, and thank goodness your husband did the right thing. Since the chicken was fine afterwards, then that proves the point.
I would wonder at the qualities of a person who can't tune in to...
I'm in Northern California, in a suburb that does not allow chickens. My backyard is quite large for the suburbs (1/3 acre) , but I have four neighbors and a creek path that abut my property. I built a beautiful coop, painted it the same color as my house, and place it where it can only be seen...

I am not zoned for any chickens, so I have to ignore my "callings" to add more breeds. I never dreamed that chickens would be such fun pets!

Yes, I thought he could be an Old English Red Pyle Game as well and sent some links to pictures of them. That started the idea of naming him "Gomer".
Since I am new to chickens, I wasn't sure what breed he was and wanted some expert help. Much appreciated!

Hello! I have been reading BYC for over a year now in preparation for my first set of chicks who will be one year old in April. I can't believe how much fun they are. When I was a child I remember someone telling me that "if you had chickens you didn't need a TV". I now understand completely...
