    Female turkey attacks me

Well if you’d like a fun story here’s a fun story. We were accidentally given a broad breasted turkey with our Cornish cross from the hatchery. Well we kept her and adore her. She is over a year now and is so very friendly. Always laid eggs and sat on them so we ordered 4 pults for her. She...

    6 week old mother?

She was raised with 3 other chickens and has been out with the flock for about 2 weeks! So plenty of buddies! I guess she just likes that they are smaller than her!

    6 week old mother?

I hatched this chicken 6 weeks ago from an incubator. Today I got 4 turkey pults I was hoping my female turkey would raise. She however didn’t care for them at all and this chicken did. Now she is teaching them to eat and letting them cuddled under her wings. Could she have just really good...

    Wisconsin Winter

We have 18 other birds she and her babies will have to be reintegrated with. That’s difficult to do in the snow when they can’t separate or disperse if tempers run hot. I don’t know how fiercely mother hens protect their young but that’s a big worry for me too

    Wisconsin Winter

A hen of ours went broody and hatched out 3 babies. They are doing well but we are heading into the coldest months of the year, they won’t be feathered in time to ease them into the cold. They and their momma are in a heated garage at the moment and I don’t want to keep them in there till...

Salmonella, do I kill the whole flock?

Thank you for all of this. I will be reading that article as well. I’ve know salmonella occurred everywhere and if it was just up to me (I only had symptoms for a day or so) i would eat the birds, my husband has been very sick for days so it’s mainly up to him. I will reach out to my local...

Salmonella, do I kill the whole flock?

We have cats and dogs. Cats are outside dogs inside. We also live on 40acres in a rural area so yes they come into contact with all sorts of things. We’ve never had a problem before however. Thank you!

Salmonella, do I kill the whole flock?

Yes, shoes stay in the garage. Hands get washed. If I know I got poop on my clothes it immediately goes to the wash too. I also clean after every killing time make sure there is no contamination.

Salmonella, do I kill the whole flock?

I don’t want my first thought to be my chickens either. It was just the timing of the whole thing. Found and killed a sick chicken- we all got sick shortly there after

Salmonella, do I kill the whole flock?

Thank you for the links. I’ll check them out. I know you’re able to get Salmonella from many things. My mind just immediately jumped to the sick bird. I do NOT want to waste all of the meat on these birds and I have been trying to think of where else it could have been contracted. It was just...

Salmonella, do I kill the whole flock?

We were the ones to kill the chicken but no it wasn’t tested. The birds in question are meat birds. You just answered the question that’s been burning in my mind. I would assume you could cook the chicken and it would be safe to consume, but that’s just assuming. I can’t seem to find any...

Salmonella, do I kill the whole flock?

We are home bodies in a rural area. We don’t eat out much so I’m not sure where else we could have gotten it from. I’m skeptical as to where it truly came from but the only explanation is from sick birds. The bird we culled was lethargic as if it was sick anyway. We don’t treat our chickens as...

Salmonella, do I kill the whole flock?

Ah I see, that probably would have been a smarter route than a stationary coop. Diagnosis was given 10/31/2020 so yesterday.
