My wife and I started our first flock in May of 2013. It included two of each: Ameraucana, Black Australorp, Rhode Island Red and Barred Plymouth Rock. For the next six years it was all RIRs - great layers, great personalities. Since 2019, I've farmed Black Sex-Links, and have been impressed. They're a little more docile than RIRs, and lay just as well. We also have a border collie and are beekeepers. Farm life is the best!
