I have had this happen with two of my hens. In both cases, the culprit was someone pecking the feathers out of the others bum. Mean!! I put blue kote on the wound. Egg production has resumed in the first victim, but not yet in the second.
Hi all:
I know the heat is making us all cranky, but one of my hen's has an injury from being pecked (repeatedly?) on her head, now her comb is partially torn and head is bloody. I don't have the ability to separate her, we have only one coop with attached run. I put antibiotic ointment on...
Yep our are crazy too. I thought maybe there was something in the coop, or that they didn't like the fresh straw I put into the nesting boxes. But no......they are just LOUD! the neighbors are gonna have a fit!
I have some that are lavender (they were called blue splash, or black splash by the farm that we got them from.) They are lovely, with slate legs and feet, but have yet to produce an egg. Our blacks lay 1 or 2 a week right now.
Well, we have 2 lavender and 2 black, and the lavender's haven't laid yet at all. The black lay only occasionally. I didn't realize this would be the case when we incubated and hatched them. They are beautiful birds. Our Americana's and RIR's are the good layers, but one of my Americana's just...

We are in Webster Groves too! I have 8 hens and we live south of 44, where are you? I go to Fenton Feed Mill and they are wonderful. In a pinch I go to O.K. Hatchery in Kirkwood on Argonne.
That is terrible! We searched a lot when we were building our coop and found the cheapest was csn.com. Free shipping and it came in the largest rolls. We bought 19 gauge 1/2 inch. Works great.
We modeled our coop after another byc members. His was wonderful. If you search "Wichita Cabin...

Do I want to know why you had one duckling egg? Hmmmm..... Very funny and entertaining story. I love this forum. I learn so much and am always entertained!
We took our 15 chicks to a friend's farm today to help with sexing. We can't keep roosters here, so I thought it would be a good time to "make the cut". They were born on May 11th which makes them 7 weeks old today. We came home with 8.
It was a 2.5 hour round trip and I'm sure they were...
