Yes, enrgizerbunny, the vent sexing is the most accurate way to sex day old chicks, but even trained professionals sometimes get it wrong (as evidenced by my Australorp rooster). Most average chicken owners can't vent sex because it is very hard to learn how to do.
Yes. Probably not more than a trio per pen. And probably just for a few months, just enough to have some more of our own birds and not necessarily to sell a lot of chicks or hatching eggs. Thanks everyone!
Just in case anyone reads this wondering the same thing, I will say that my Jerseys began laying soon after I posted this. I also read that when a rooster starts mounting hens, it's because the hens are close to sexual maturity and is a sign that they will be laying soon.
My two kids want two different breeds to focus on for their 4H project this year. One wants Ameraucana and the other D'Anvers. We have to get our chicks from two different sources. I know that normally any chickens we acquire should be quarantined from the existing flock. Do I need to quarantine...
We are thinking about setting up a few breeding pens this spring, but this is our first time doing this. While we have a mixed flock of bantams and standards, I want to build all the pens to fit the larger birds. What size is a good size? I am worried about them being too small since our...
We found a stash in the back of our truck. We had several bales in the back of the truck from a project, and I would see our porcelain D'uccle back there from time to time. I noticed the egg production seemed to have gone down, but I had checked that truck bed a couple of times and hadn't found...
If you decide to get rid of the incubator, I would suggest Craigslist or better yet, find a local Facebook buy and sell group for poultry and chickens. Wisconsin has two, so I imagine that you would have some as well. You could use one of the incubation groups to find out more about your...
Thanks so much for your help. This pair was given to us. We were actually looking for a white drake because my son had his heart set on one, but this pair came our way and we are so grateful. And if the white female ever turns out to be a male, I guess we will be getting what he originally wanted.
My Jerseys are five months old, and recently the roo has started mounting the pullets fairly frequently. I know that Jerseys mature more slowly than other chickens, so it is going to take awhile to get eggs from them, but is the mounting a sign that my females are ready to start laying soon? Or...
Well, the white should be a female, because that's what the previous two owners said, and she doesn't have a tail curl and I would think a 2 year old would have shown a tale curl. I will admit that she doesn't lay eggs, but I assumed that calls are more of a spring layer.
I was going to post...
