An update to our Buff's first egg - she took Saturday off, but laid again yesterday, and wow, it was huge (and a double-yoker). It's the one of the far left.
Also, one of our RIRs, the one that has been squatting too, laid her first egg today! It was small, but otherwise perfect...
So we have five hens - 1 Hyline (came to us already laying and 20weeks old at the time, in July), 2 Buff Orps and 2 RIRs. Our Buffs and RIRs hatched sometime in late March/early April. And until today, only our Hyline has been laying - yes, a bloody long wait.
Holy moly, what a wait!
But...
well, I am still waiting on my four gals (two RIRs and two Buffs Orpingtons) who are supposedly 24 or 25 weeks, but none are laying yet. only one has the comb & wattles that look remotely mature, but she hasn't started laying, and the others look still immature in combs and wattles. I suspect...
Yes, I've searched several of the threads, but either they talked about the combs, or other parts, or didn't have photos, or didn't have photos relevant.
A book I have on Chicken health says that Favus is "rare in North America", so I'm hoping it's not.
thanks

My Hyline hen, 22 weeks old, has white-ish colouring on her red earlobes. I can't tell if it's a coating or if the skin itself is turning white.
She is active and laying (brown eggs) and seems quite normal. Nothing else is white-ish on her.
Here is a photo my son managed to capture the other...
Just an update on our 21week old Hyline hen, who came to us last week already laying. Today was a first - the first time in the nesting boxes, amongst the golf-balls. She doesn't yet sleep in the coop with the other girls, so while she has been consistent about laying in the morning (except for...
Well, our Caramel has been giving us one a day since last Saturday (except Sunday), mostly in the mornings. She doesn't seem to do the egg song before/after laying, and just lays where she is. We've had her in a seperate sleeping cage (for a while longer anyway), and she laid in that around...
Hi Pele,
I'm not sure if it's her first egg or not. It seems a good size, and she is 20 weeks, so I suspect not.
We did witness a short "egg song" today, but when I went out to see if the result was another egg, there wasn't any to be found. We waited and watched all the rest of the...
So I am happy to report that we got our first egg today!
Now, to be fair, it is from a 20-week old Hyline hen that we brought home yesterday. We are keeping her seperate from the other girls (16 weeks old), and I did show her the nesting boxes, but she went for a cool dirt patch behind the...
The woman got back to me, and itsn't 100% sure - she has the dates of either March 7th, 19th or 30th as to when my gals hatched. A bit of variation, but at least I know. They still seem to have awfully small combs/wattles for being born then, or am I off on this?
cheers
Ursa
Right, well I've contacted the woman who sold me my two Buff Orps and two RIRs, just to find out for sure how old my girls are - about 16-17 weeks or 12-13 weeks. Bit of a difference, no?
