    Elongated egg...Is this normal?

My Easter Eggers are getting a few months into laying and the small long and skinny eggs are being replaced by REALLY long and bigger eggs. I wonder if they make special egg cartons for the EE hens. Not really...They were a big surprise at first. They also just started getting much bluer than...

2 Day Old Chick Eyes Closed

My chicks got here a week and a half ago. I noticed one of my littler chicks had completely closed eyes, but I don't think she arrived like that. I gently wiped her face with a warm wet cotton ball every few hours. The next morning one eye was a little open and after two more cotton ball face...

I just ordered 10 chicks to replenish my diminishing herd.

Thanks. I already decided to find a hatchery here in SW Oregon or one of the hardware/farm stores that have chicks by breed and sex.

I just ordered 10 chicks to replenish my diminishing herd.

I had incubated 11 chicks in Nov & Dec of 23. They came out as 6 hens and 5 roos that just hit 5 - 6 months old and life was getting intolerable for me and the hens. After getting some very helpful comments from the members, I culled 4 of the roos. I did one rooster and it took me a week to...

What’s the deal with you chicken people??

Thanks, I really didn't understand the process. Sounds very scientific.

    What breed is this chicken?

She kinda looks like a pigeon, very tidy looking. It doesn't have any red on it's face. Is it on the small side or is that the fence making it look small?

What’s the deal with you chicken people??

I've had 6 chickens officially for a year. They were mostly black and apparently siblings. Half became roos and half became hens. I don't know what kind of chickens are "black", there are probably a coupla dozen breeds that kick out black chickens. They've got pictures and posters and if you...

I don't know if I can do this...

I have 4 large roosters to do. I waited to see if the grown up chicks would stay buddies, but no, they are sparring partners and everything is up in the air all the time. I am looking for a good size jug. Thanks!

How did you prepare yourself (mentally) for first time butchering?

Thank you for your message. My first rooster from yesterday is resting in the fridge. I think we're making soup in a pressure cooker.

I don't know if I can do this...

excellent methodology. Our kitty litter comes in a box, but I can find something close. I'll try this next. Thanks...

I am sooo sorry about your thumb. I am always recuperating from some farm related injury and it makes you not want to climb a tree to prune it. Just sayin'...

I don't know if I can do this...

Sounds like me yesterday. I'm going to try the feet tied up on a limb and slice the throat next. Using an "almost" sharp enough axe was not good. 5 whacks if 4 too many. I also did a rake over the neck and pull for a favorite rooster who became paralyzed. I only have 3 or 4 roosters to go...

Dealing with emotions of a botched kill

Thanks for that. I'm going to watch a couple more videos specifically on culling roosters and see about not plucking before skinning. I have 3-4 more roosters to go...
