    Choosing rooster

I think getting a good rooster is simply in luck of the draw... or as others mention it's a crap shoot! For years I didn't have roosters then about 3 years ago I took in a small flock with 2 roosters... these fellas didn't get along so the beta went to butcher... the alpha was a wonderful...

    Hens breaking eggs?

I put 2 golf balls in each of the nest boxes about a year ago... my mystery egg eater(s) have vanished 👀

I'm so sorry for the loss of your friend. You cared for her wonderfully and I'm sure she knew it.

What was your worst mistake as a chicken keeper?

Yes! This spring is the first time I've ever bought chicks from TSC. My local TSC kept marking chicks & ducklings down to $.50 or $1.00 and they kept doing it til almost June! So I kept buying them til all my bins were full... that was almost 100 peeps total. I only have about 60 left & they...

What was your worst mistake as a chicken keeper?

There were 2 leghorn girls that I didn't butcher actually had their feathers grow back. They didn't molt either... Albeit they're thin but both Brownie & Pecky are fully feathered again. I'll post some pics in a little bit

    Hens with new Roosters.

So if all your chicks were adults ... you would have 3 roosters & 9 hens ... right? I agree with others posting... you either need lots more hens --or-- you need 2 less roosters. I would suggest putting the 2 roosters in an enclosure by themselves ... until you figure out what to do with...

What was your worst mistake as a chicken keeper?

I've used Demand CS in my basement for many years. Just the past few years I started using it to prevent mites. It also kills/prevents termites, carpenter bees & carpenter ants. 😊 Idk why there's so many carpenter bees here.

What was your worst mistake as a chicken keeper?

I guess I didn't understand the OP was spraying meds. I spray a commercial grade insecticide after a thorough coop cleaning, it helps to eliminate flies as well. My coop is a converted corn crib, so it has a concrete floor. I don't spray my chickens though. It's called DemandCS, it's a...

What was your worst mistake as a chicken keeper?

What did you spray your coop & chickens with? I'm just wondering because I'm about to do a more than thorough coop cleaning before winter...

    Bare Back Hens

No, I wouldn't cull them! The bare backs & wings are from being overmated. As long as they are being mated the feathers won't grow back. The bare skin will turn darker & more red when they're in the sun, especially with a higher UV index in the afternoons. I would separate them from the...

    Hens with new Roosters.

These roosters were already hurting hens ... the only way to keep them & keep your 2 hens & keep your 8 chicks is to keep the roosters separate from the hens & chicks. If you put 2 ill mannered roosters with 2 laying hens you're going to have over mated hens very quickly. How old is the baby...

What was your worst mistake as a chicken keeper?

I wasnt new when I made this mistake. 🥴 I kept 2 roosters that I liked because I read somewhere that Buff Orphingtons were the calmest of gentlemen. I also believed that I could have 2 roosters for 30 hens. The consequences were slow to show but they were not doable for anyone or hen involved...
