Thank you for your reply.
So I should start thinking about separate housing for the guineas? Do you think the chickens would be easier to re-home to a different coop?
I'll pick up the game bird grower and start thinking about housing......
Thank you again
Hi folks
I have batch of chicks and guineas -- 8 of each. They are being housed in the same coop and have been eating medicated chick starter. They are now 8 weeks old and I am changing feed to grower crumbles.
Any opinions or suggestions on difference in chicken grower feed vs gamebird...
I know it's been a couple months, but is there any more info on this chick? I have a buff that has a butt that looks like this. Did she pull thru?? What did you do??
Is this a prolapse or pastey butt? I'm frantically looking for info.
My chick is 10 days old. I check them 2 or 3 times a day and...
Hi folks
At my local feed store guineas are only available on first delivery. Ex: order by April 17th - pick up on May 1st. Chickens can be ordered and picked up on several dates. Usually April thru June. Is there a reason for this, or is it just store policy? I have noticed it at another feed...
Going to try the upside down tub trick... good one!!! Thanks
Janet I do have a run attached to the coop, the fencing is 2in field fence. Large enoughr that I couldn't afford to cover with hardware cloth. But that sure would work
UPDATE --- I have identified the culprit..... It is a (very wide) red squirrel. He is so well fed, as he ran away he was sinking in the snow. Not sure what to do, I'm going thru 50# of pellets in about 10 days. I was mixing in BOSS with the pellets. He seems to be scooping out the pellets...
Thanks for the comments
I think I'll give it another few days before removing feed at night. They DO get some extras during the day, but I am filling what is labeled a "12 pound" feeder to the top every other day with pellets. I'm going to pay strict attention to dates and amounts, rather than...
I'm in NH and just went thru an extremely cold week at the end of January (16 -20 below zero overnight). All seemed "normal" during that week. It has been in about the last 8-10 days following that cold snap that we've gone thru that amount of food. Could it be a delayed reaction?? They seemed...
Hi folks
I just went thru a 50# bag of pellets in less than 2 weeks.... I have 11 hens and normally a bag will last about a month. I have a hanging feeder in the coop all the time and suspect someone is coming in for a free lunch. I haven't seen any squirrels and I don't think I would see mice...
Thanks for the replys!!
I am able to handle 2 of the 10 so far...... I try to at least touch or stroke the chest if on comes close enough. I don't want to corner them to often, some just really seem to freak at the smallest movement. I'd prefer they come to me rather than me picking each up...
Hi Folks
New chicks arrived June 16th. I'm looking for your experiences with getting them used to being handled. I've started with just sitting in their enclosure, then letting them peck crumbles from my hand, and there are 1 or 2 (out of 10 total chicks). that now let me pick them up...
Hi Mommysongbird
I don't think it smells funny--she didn't mention that--let's hope not. I thought at first my fridge may have been too cold and it froze(?) but it was only 1 egg out of the dozen. They definately aren't old---I think 3-4 days is the longest a dozen has ever been in the fridge.
Thanks for the reply Duckinnut
She's a farm girl and understands the concept of "fresh". I think this is beyond thick -- she says almost solid. I'll have her save one and show me. Any thoughts about what causes EXTRA thick whites???
Hi All
A person I regularly give eggs commented today that every once in a while she gets an egg with a" gelatinous white". Not the shell -- but the white part of the egg is "like jello or almost solid". She doesn't eat them, and doesn't happen a lot. She thinks she has seen about 4 eggs with...
